There is no restriction in the frame for the pin which has a short stirrup at the junction of shaft and wrap around head. The stirrup is decorated with transverse grooves, and the facets of the shaft, which has a diamond cross-section, are engraved with diagonal grooves to create a herring-bone pattern from the front. The backs of the frame and pin are plain.

Quatrefoil pendant in corroded condition with traces of red and blue enamel.
The traces of enamel suggest the design is likley to be that recorded by Ashley (Medieval Armorial Horse Funtiture in Norfolk, EAA 101, 2002, nos. 208-13) i.e., a lion passant or guardant on a square field from each side of which springs a fleur-de-lis? into each foil. Ashley notes (p.23) that the design is allusive for England and France and therefore are more likely to have been made after 1340.

Trumpet type brooch in corroded condition. Circular head bent sharply backwards, trace of pierced lug on the back of the head, spring gear and pin missing. The head is decorated with a pair of 'eyes' to either side that probably once contained enamel. Traces of swirling pattern of silver inlay around the 'eyes'. The waist bead comprises three flattened cushions which extend around the back of the bow but are flattened at the back. The catchplate is much denuded. Foot missing.

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Blaenau Gwent

Cast copper alloy vessel, leg, sub-trapezoidal in section. The outer edge and sides are decorated with longitudinal grooves. The leg tapers towards its rounded base. The weight of the vessel leg suggests that the copper alloy was leaded. Probably the leg of either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is not possible because the form of vessel legs remained similar from the late medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95). Length 46.5mm, maximum width 31.5mm, maximum thickness 20mm. Thirteenth to seventeenth century.
