A small chain comprising two silver links. Both links are square in plan. One is a slight D section, and plain, and both ends have been cut unevenly. It may be that this is not a link but a remnant of silver which has been bent into shape to loop with the other. The second link is joined and it is difficult to see where this join is, which makes the first link all the more likely not to be part of the original chain. This second link is highly decorated, with a wave and dot pattern on a background of parallel lines, running perpendicular to the edges of the link. This link has wea…

Copper alloy possible anti-aircraft shell fragment. A shard from the slightly everted rim of a cylindrical object vessel of estimated diameter 80mm with iron staining at the top; shattered at either side and along its lower edge. The pattern of catastrophic damage might point to a shard from an exploded anti-aircraft shell, which would be consistent with its suspected diameter. The iron staining may alternatively indicate this object had a place in an assembly of iron or steel parts intimately associated with or enclosed by a thick [5.5mm] copper alloy casing – a definition which…

A complete Post Medieval or Modern lead alloy bag seal, dating to cAD 1800 -1900. It appears to be two cast discs pinched together around the outer edges, leaving a slot in one part of the edge and a divided slot in the opposite edge. A string from a bag could be fed through the centre of the seal which was then closed to allow the item to function as a drawstring bag secure closure. The thickness of the outside edge is marked with transverse ridges, presumably part of the initial pinching process, while the impressed centre has a number on one face and a …

White metal ingot. A cast oval fragment of dense bright white metal which has been tightly rolled, hammered to round-ended cylindrical form and subsequently indented. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. The mass of the object does not coincide closely with that of a series of weights – derived from the Scandi…
