A modern bead, possibly of glass or other materials, dating from AD 1900 - 2023. The bead is oval in plan and roughly circular in section. There are two small perforations visible in one end. The centre of the bead is black at one end, and slightly soft, perhaps plastic or rubber.  It is surrounded by a white crystalline material which covers the other end. This has an outer shell (of paint or plastic?) of dark blue, which is peeling at one end. The bead is opaque. The bead measures 12.7mm in length, 7.1mm in diameter and weighs 0.6g.

A fragment of probably modern partially melted glass, probably dating from AD 1850 - 2000. It is translucent and colourless, with no internal structure visible. The two main faces and all the unbroken edges are sinuous, suggesting this is glass that has been melted and solidified, rather than a naturally occurring quartz crystal. Two edges are breaks displaying conchoidal fractures. It is 25mm long, 23mm wide and 7.7mm thick. 6.3g.  Modern glass would not normally be recorded, but it was found on a site of prehistoric activity where a knapped rock crystal lithic implement ha…

Late Post Medieval to Modern dress brooch, initially thought to be coloured paste and yellow metal. After recording the finder took it for examination by a jeweller who stated it to be gold and topaz. The former was thought to be more likely as there are no assay marks though these are not always present on jewellery. The brooch consists of a highly ornate frame consisting of swags, coronets and finials in gold. Inside this there is a large piece of honey yellow topaz which has been given one of the more recent brilliant cuts. The brooch is largely complete though the pin and some of i…

A rim fragment of a glass vessel dating to the Post Medieval to Modern period. The fragment is sub-trapezoidal in shape and is of a light green, translucent glass matrix. The outer surface of the fragment is marked by three raised ribs with corresponding lower portions in between. One end of the fragment is thicker and smooth, forming a rim, whilst the other edges are broken. The thinness of the glass suggests it is modern. The fragment is 24.7mm long, 25.9mm wide, 1.5mm thick and weighs 1.73g.

Twelve shards of green and white glass from a bottle of Bentinck's Very Old Peculiar (seven white shards), Jimkin Bearhugger's whiskey (four green shards) and one cocktail glass (one white shard), which contained minute traces of banana daiquiri. These shards were hastily recovered from a bar fight by Dr Pat Harkin prior to the fire that destroyed the Broken Drum (and half of Ankh-Morpork). The bottle of Bentinck's Very Old Peculiar has also been positively identified as that of Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully's bottle, though the hat and Archchancellor have been seen since hiding beh…

Glass bottle fragment. A small fragment from the base of a wine or medicine bottle of blue-green glass [blue under reflected light but green in transmitted light], is here presented to illustrate the misleading result of multiple abrasions, which led the finder to initially consider this to be a prehistoric flint tool. The Australian Aboriginal custom of working up arrowheads from glass or china telegraph insulators could produce objects of this appearance; examples were displayed at North Lincolnshire Museum in recent times and are held by various museum collections. Such activity is…

A clear glass bottle dating from AD1921 to AD1930. This glass vessel has a square cross-section measuring 42.9mm x 41.9mm and height of 165.0mm. The external surface of the base has a slight concave depression (convex dome internally). All of the cuboid's corners and edges are rounded rather than having 90 degree angles. The external surfaces of two the opposing bottle walls have moulded lettering. This lettering is moulded in relief and is positioned to be read left to right when the bottle is laying on its side rather than stood on the base. However the bottle has to be rotated 180 …

Black glassy slag. Industrial residue: probably waste from a heavy industry of post-medieval to modern date. Greenish glassy material resembling this in all but its tint continues to be reused as hardcore of specified grades b y the construction industry up to the present day, while solid residues and slags from furnaces were similarly used for building or even decorative purposes through the 20th century. The accompanying finds tend to confirm the likelihood of a recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1930. Length: 100mm, Width: 77mm, Thickness: 53mm, Weight: in excess of 500gms.

A complete glass bead of Modern date (AD 1850-1900). The object is a sub-spherical bead of opaque light blue glass with a central, circular, stringing hole. The outer surface bears fine turning lines, indicating the object has been finished on a lathe, and the inside surface of the hole also appears spirally lined by drilling, both features tending to suggest a recent date. Sky blue beads enjoyed a particular popular during the Victorian period. Diameter: 10.38mm, Diameter (of perforation): 3.06mm, Height: 7.32mm, Weight: 1.0g

An early Modern millefiori button. Circular in plan and D shaped in section it is made primarily from glass and the obverse has a millefiori design in mostly blue, white and orange. The reverse has a wire loop inserted into the blue glass which forms the reverse of the button. No parallels can be found, making accurate dating very difficult. However, by the eighteenth century, the technical knowledge for the manufacture of millefiori was lost. It was not until the nineteenth century that a revival of the technique appeared. The diameter is 11mm and the weight 1.28g. Therefore this but…

Black glass decorative knob in the form of a stylised sea shell. The design comprises a series of radiating slightly raised ridges running out to the rim. These are interrupted by a ring of raised dots about halfway along. Complete glass bead, probably post-medieval to modern in date (c AD1600-1900). The bead is opaque blue in colour and is circular, formed from a single tube of glass pinched together, forming a natural hole through the middle. The joining seam of the bead is thinner than the rest, measuring 0.87mm in thickness. Traces of paint/residue can be seen on the glass surface. Beads are difficult to date with certainty, but the colour and finish of this bead suggests a modern date.
