Victorian Silver Apothecary/Medicinal Spoon. Beautifully decorated with two snakes intertwinned and wrapped around the handle (possibly associated with the staff of Hermes, but there are no wings), but gives reference to medicine nonetheless. There is a 'pinecone' type object at the top of the spoon which is decorated with a crosshatch pattern. The snakes are intricately, with individual scales and even eyes can be seen. The measuring spoon 'bowl' is 17mm in diameter. The spoon is complete and in very good condition.

Lead tag. A sub-triangular tag cut from cast lead sheet of a regular 2mm thickness, with a pierced round hole towards its apex and the stamped or incised numeral 64 on one side, in fairly modern style. Patinated. The finder kindly suggests this to be an ear tag from livestock: a rigorous numbering system should probably imply a post-war date. Suggested date: Modern, 1950-2000. The object is a cast iron doorstop, in the shape of a horse and is Victorian in age. The obverse of the horse faces west, the object has a glass eye which is coloured blue, and has unfortunately sustained some damage but is still recognisable. The object also appeared to once have a black coloured applied patina, which is now missing but can still be seen slightly in places. The horse appears to have slight decoration around its 'harness' and 'saddle' areas, as well as 'hair' on its mane and tail, all this accompanied with the glass eye and previous patina suggests that is was a well d…

Broad period: MODERN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fired modern lead bullet. The cast lead bullet was probably originally of domed or pointed form with a hollow base, now mostly melted. The point has been flattened and the lower part of the bullet rolled/compressed upwards. The length is 13.6mm and width 18.8mm. The width of the top of the object is 11.2mm, suggesting its use for perhaps a 0.45 inch calibre weapon. There are two circumferential lines visible. Weight: 14.3grams. The bullet has characteristics of the Minié ball, but a definite designation is not possible given its condition. This was a type of muzzle-loading, spi…

Lead bag seal of post-medieval to modern date (c. 1700 - 1826 AD). The bag seal is broadly discoid in shape, although the edges are greatly chipped and broken. On one side the raised letters SPB are visible, beneath which is a date although unfortunately this is too worn to read; the first two numbers are possibly 18. There is further writing on the other side, possibly in cyrillic script, and ending in IId. This inscription is also too worn to make sense of. The use of the letters SPB (standing for Saint Petersburg, although this is not necessarily where the seal originated) imply a d…

A cast lead alloy cylinder, possibly the chamber from a toy revolver, of post-medieval to modern date. The cylinder has six circular chambers 4.5 mm diameter, arranged around a central hole of the same diameter. These chambers are 15 mm deep, then close to a 1 mm diameter. On the opposing end of the cylinder, these small 1 mm holes emerge into countersunk depressions 5mm diameter. The central hole is only 5mm deep, and would presumably have housed the axel around which the cylinder would rotate.
