Pottery body sherd with an incised line across the top edge of the exterior of the sherd. This sherd is made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars and dark augite and is dark brown on the exterior and mid-brown on the interior of the sherd. This gabbroic fabric and type of decoration are seen on local Bronze Age vessels, from the Trevisker Ware tradition, dating from c.1800-1200 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming). Nowakowski (1991) illustrates examples of linear decoration on Trevisker Ware vessel…

Pottery body sherd that appears to be a section through the pot with a moulded ovoid lug on the exterior with a finger tip impression below it which may not have been deliberate. This thick sherd is made of granitic admixture clay, so the fabric has inclusions of granite and mica and additional inclusions such as quartz not natural to the clay to make it an admixture. The sherd is mid-brown on the exterior and interior of the sherd with dark brown patches. This type of granitic admixture fabric is seen in Bronze Age vessels, dating from c.2100-1150 BC, and this sort of lug provides a l…

A plain wall sherd of a pottery vessel. The outside is slightly orangey and glittering with mica and other small grits. Inside the fabric is black to the interior surface and full of angular grits of 0-5mm size. Most are fresh and clear. This looks like a granitic composition sherd. Others have been identified from nearby from The Bronze age.

A worn sherd with a reddish exterior which continues to about 3mm under the surface, where it becomes dark brown to the interior surface The clay composition has a base of small 1-2mm corroded white felspar with other small particles including angular black augite. This is likely a clay sourced from The Lizard area, Cornwall. Other larger grits have been added of up to 8mm; mostly vein quartz and corroded felspar. The decoration remaining is what is left of an informally laid herringbone pattern using pairs of twisted cords. This is circumferentially bordered by a pair of parallel incise…

A wall sherd of fragile pottery; slightly abraded on its exterior, but with a dense and well executed decoration. This finishes a panel of twisted cords orientated at right-angles and numbering at least 15 The clay composition has a base of small 1-2mm corroded white felspar with other small particles including angular black augite. This is likely a clay sourced from The Lizard area, Cornwal…

Bronze Age collared urn consisting of twenty two body sherds. The fabric is tempered possibly with fine sand with some larger pieces of grog, flint and other stone (up to 3mm). Very little abrasion. The fabric is local clay fired on a bonfire with a flint temper. The sherds vary in size from between 55mm in length and 40mm wide and are 4mm thick. The sherds eroded out of a cliff section at Beckfoot Roman cemetery and were probably accompanied by a fragment of an incense cup. This suggests votive deposition and a previously unknown Bronze Age phase to the cemetery, with re-use in the R…
