Gold rod, possibly from an unfinished twisted torc or arm/neck ornament. It is square in section with two broken ends. These edges have been made using a swage with a triangular indentation which creates a feathery edge that has then been hammered back into the metal, as they could not file them off as they would now, and can be seen as wavy lines on the sides of the fragment (Martin Page pers comm). Similar examples have been found individually, from Paul parish (CORN-B6B241). If it is an unfinished twisted neck ornament as seems possible, then it would date from the Middle Bronze Ag

A Bronze Age gold flanged- twisted torc fragment can be dated typologically to the Taunton (c. 1400-1250 BC), more probably the Penard (c. 1300-1150 BC), metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age. Treasure case no. 2011 T501. The coiled flanges have a regular spacing although are slightly tighter on one end. Both ends have been cut and as a result the flanges were crushed and are flattened. The profile is slightly curved. The rim on the flanges has marks and is flattened in some areas. Possible traces of repair between flanges. Length: 40.76 mm, Maximum Thickness: 6.71 mm, Wei…

Gold fragment of a twisted torc, or arm/neck ornament, with three-flanged twisted body, which is triangular in section, and expanded terminal, which is circular in section. Twisted ornaments from this period are normally four-flanged and square in section, so this example is unusual, and perhaps was rejected as it has been levered off the longer piece at one end and folded in on itself, ready to be placed in a crucible and melted down to be re-used. The terminal also looks unfinished. Similar examples have been found in a gold hoard from Amalveor, Towednack, also in Penwith, but these…

Two middle Bronze Age ribbon torcs. Description 1. A gold ribbon torc with hooks at both ends which has been folded and bent in eight places. A narrow thicker section of un-hammered wire has been left in the centre of the torc and at both ends. The latter narrow lengths have been folded back on themselves to form the simple hook fasteners. The surfaces are smooth and the colour a shiny light gold. Folded length: 100.5mm; approx unfolded length: 346.7mm; max width of ribbon; 8.8mm; min width of ribbon: 2mm; thickness range; 0.4mm-1.4mm; length of hooks: 8.4mm; thickness of hoo…

A gold twisted slender armlet that has been coiled six times (Middle Bronze Age circa 1300-1100BC). The armlet has a four-flange twisted body and plain terminals which expand gently towards the ends (length: 42.10mm; diameter at widest point: 5.12mm). The terminals are doubled back. The armlet is coiled neatly into a roughly circular shape. Two of the coils have been bent back at ninety degrees to the rest of the coils, this may be deliberate or it may be modern damage, ?plough damage. Dimensions: weight: 132.43g; length: 83.33mm; width: 72.94mm; thickness: 46.99mm. This is part of a …

Curved fragment of a Middle Bronze Age, 1400-1100 BC, copper-alloy twisted ribbon torc. The fragment has six twists with old, patinated, breaks at each end. The twists are slightly tighter at the ends than in the centre and the curve is uneven suggesting it has been bent out of shape. The 'ribbon' is a flattened pointed oval in section with edges which come to a point. The fragment is 64.8mm long, the ribbon varies from 8.0 to 7.3mm wide and is 2.0mm thick. The fragment weighs 8.28 grams. There are two Middle Bronze Age bronze ribbon torcs known from Somerset from the hoards at Edi…

Fragment of penannular copper alloy middle Bronze Age spiral twisted torc. The fragment is 68.5mm long, 54mm of which is comprised of a twisted spiral with curved peaks (5.8mm thick) and troughs (4.5mm thick), and the remainder is narrowed to a circular section (3.2mm in diameter). The fragment has a dark green to black patina with old breaks at either end. Based on the curvature of this fragment the estimated original diameter of the whole torc would be approximately 220mm. The find is paralleled by examples found in the 'Near Lewes' hoard in 2011 cf. SUSS-C5D042 which date to the mi…

Description: The 'East Cambridgeshire' torc is a four-flange twisted bar torc of Middle Bronze Age date, known to belong to the Penard phase of c.1300-1150 BC (Taylor 1980, 62; Needham 2001; Roberts 2007). It is made of three separate components: two very similar, undecorated, bent-back, 'trumpet'-shaped, terminals affixed at either end of an exceptionally long (126.5cms, excluding the terminals) spiral twisted bar with very regular cruciform (i.e. '+' shaped) cross-section. The advantages of casting such an elaborate torc in three pieces is discussed by Taylor (1980, 61-2). A neat …

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, consisting of a section including one complete end (Eogan 1967). The torc has a cruciform (x-shaped) cross-section with four flanges coming to a sub-square terminal where the flanges are only minimally visible. It is bent at a curved right angle shortly before the break at the other end. The complete end is square in cross-section, measuring 2.9x2.8mm. From here the flanges start to become defined and then begin to twist. At the deepest the depth between the flanges is 1.5mm d…

Treasure case 2016 T203: Acquired by Somerset Museum Service Description: A fragment of Middle Bronze Age flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The torc would have been manufactured from a cast bar into which four longitudinal cuts were made. These were then worked to create an X-shaped cross-section and finally the bar was twisted to create a spiral effect. Only a small portion of the original object survives. The fragment terminates in clean breaks at either end and is likely to have been cut. It has been bent into a U-shape with one terminal projecting upwards and the other bent…

Incomplete copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the Taunton and Penard 'Ornament Horizon' metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age, circa 1400-1150 BC. The present 73mm diameter annular shape is formed from circular-section bronze rod which has been twisted into a spiral. The ends slightly overlap and both have been broken in antiquity. On one of the broken ends the twist and cross-section begins to taper-off suggesting that the break is close to a missing hooked-end terminal. The other end is an abrupt break across full twist and cross-section. The evidence strongly suggests t…

Description: Possibly less than half of the object survives due to two transverse breaks in the bar. The object is made of a rod that has bent into a U-shape in plane.
