Description: Piece of gold rod, probably a small fragment of a flange-twisted or bar-twisted torc with three flanges, now bent into a spiral of two full turns. One end is original, with a rounded tip and neat triangular cross-section. From the rounded tip, the terminal flares slightly for c. 10mm and runs straight, before starting to coil. As it starts to curve, each face becomes concave so that the cross-section is Y-shaped, and the rod is then neatly twisted as well as bent into a coil. After two full turns the rod is apparently cut or broken. It is…

A fragment of a flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, 39.7mm in length, dating to the Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase) c. 1300 - 1100 BC. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges twisted into a spiral with a circular cross-section of 6.6mm diameter. Both ends of the fragment are abraded and one appears to have been crushed. It is unclear whether the fragment has broken off from or been cut from the original torc.

A fragment from a Bronze Age copper-alloy spiral twisted torc. The fragment is formed from a sub-square cross-sectioned bar that has been twisted into a spiral along its length. It is bent into a slight arc and there is a clean, cut break across each end. It survives in fairly good condition with patches of corrosion in places on the surface and no obvious signs of wear. This spiral-twisted style of torc is a feature of the late middle Bronze Age 'ornament horizon', which is now placed in the Taunton and Penard metalwork phases c. 1400-1150 cal BC, with a partic…

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The fragment is straight with breaks at either end. A complete, albeit warped, Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the ornament horizon (1400-1250 cal BC). The torc is made of a copper alloy bar that has been bent into a U-shape in profile, the terminals then bent outwards at c.45 and 40 degrees. When in use it would have originally been bent into a more sub-circular shape. The bar is made up of a four flange twisted bar placed between two plain pointed terminals. Both the torc’s terminals survive intact as 40.5mm long plain, circular cross sectioned rods that narrow down their lengths from 6.2mm i…

Description: Single fragment of a gold, four-flange, twisted bar torc comprising one terminal and a length of twisted metal which represents probably less than half of the original hoop. The surviving terminal is round in cross section and is between 3mm and 5mm in diameter. Curved fragment of a Middle Bronze Age, 1400-1100 BC, copper-alloy twisted ribbon torc. The fragment has six twists with old, patinated, breaks at each end. The twists are slightly tighter at the ends than in the centre and the curve is uneven suggesting it has been bent out of shape. The 'ribbon' is a flattened pointed oval in section with edges which come to a point. The fragment is 64.8mm long, the ribbon varies from 8.0 to 7.3mm wide and is 2.0mm thick. The fragment weighs 8.28 grams. There are two Middle Bronze Age bronze ribbon torcs known from Somerset from the hoards at Edi…

Gold rod, possibly from an unfinished twisted torc or arm/neck ornament. It is square in section with two broken ends. These edges have been made using a swage with a triangular indentation which creates a feathery edge that has then been hammered back into the metal, as they could not file them off as they would now, and can be seen as wavy lines on the sides of the fragment (Martin Page pers comm). Similar examples have been found individually, from Paul parish (CORN-B6B241). If it is an unfinished twisted neck ornament as seems possible, then it would date from the Middle Bronze Ag

Two middle Bronze Age ribbon torcs. Description 1. A gold ribbon torc with hooks at both ends which has been folded and bent in eight places. A narrow thicker section of un-hammered wire has been left in the centre of the torc and at both ends. The latter narrow lengths have been folded back on themselves to form the simple hook fasteners. The surfaces are smooth and the colour a shiny light gold. Folded length: 100.5mm; approx unfolded length: 346.7mm; max width of ribbon; 8.8mm; min width of ribbon: 2mm; thickness range; 0.4mm-1.4mm; length of hooks: 8.4mm; thickness of hoo…

Gold fragment of a twisted torc, or arm/neck ornament, with three-flanged twisted body, which is triangular in section, and expanded terminal, which is circular in section. Twisted ornaments from this period are normally four-flanged and square in section, so this example is unusual, and perhaps was rejected as it has been levered off the longer piece at one end and folded in on itself, ready to be placed in a crucible and melted down to be re-used. The terminal also looks unfinished. Similar examples have been found in a gold hoard from Amalveor, Towednack, also in Penwith, but these…

A gold twisted armlet that has been coiled five times (Middle Bronze Age circa 1300-1100BC). The armlet has a four-flange twisted body and plain terminals which expand gently towards the ends (length: 58.42mm; diameter at widest point: 7.65mm). The terminals are doubled back. There is some modern damage (?plough damage) to two of the coils and this has distorted the overall shape of the coiled armlet. Dimensions: weight: 262g; length: 123.69mm; width: 75.35mm; thickness: 81.31mm. This is part of a Middle Bronze Age hoard consisting of two twisted arm/neck ornaments and three penannula…

A gold twisted slender armlet that has been coiled six times (Middle Bronze Age circa 1300-1100BC). The armlet has a four-flange twisted body and plain terminals which expand gently towards the ends (length: 42.10mm; diameter at widest point: 5.12mm). The terminals are doubled back. The armlet is coiled neatly into a roughly circular shape. Two of the coils have been bent back at ninety degrees to the rest of the coils, this may be deliberate or it may be modern damage, ?plough damage. Dimensions: weight: 132.43g; length: 83.33mm; width: 72.94mm; thickness: 46.99mm. This is part of a …

The neckring is made from a heavy, thick bar of oval cross-section, which is thickest in the middle and tapers towards both ends. The terminals are finished off as flat oval surfaces. The object appears to have had a good surface finish prior to damage and it has been left entirely plain. The original curvature of the ornament has been distorted asymmetrically so that one arm is more extended than the other. The middle of the bar bears deep >cuts= across both faces apparently having been formed by ancient chisel strikes. Dimensions and metal content: Maximum dimension (distorted) 20…
