Gold rod, possibly from an unfinished twisted torc or arm/neck ornament. It is square in section with two broken ends. These edges have been made using a swage with a triangular indentation which creates a feathery edge that has then been hammered back into the metal, as they could not file them off as they would now, and can be seen as wavy lines on the sides of the fragment (Martin Page pers comm). Similar examples have been found individually, from Paul parish (CORN-B6B241). If it is an unfinished twisted neck ornament as seems possible, then it would date from the Middle Bronze Ag

Gold fragment of a twisted torc, or arm/neck ornament, with three-flanged twisted body, which is triangular in section, and expanded terminal, which is circular in section. Twisted ornaments from this period are normally four-flanged and square in section, so this example is unusual, and perhaps was rejected as it has been levered off the longer piece at one end and folded in on itself, ready to be placed in a crucible and melted down to be re-used. The terminal also looks unfinished. Similar examples have been found in a gold hoard from Amalveor, Towednack, also in Penwith, but these…

Fragment of penannular copper alloy middle Bronze Age spiral twisted torc. The fragment is 68.5mm long, 54mm of which is comprised of a twisted spiral with curved peaks (5.8mm thick) and troughs (4.5mm thick), and the remainder is narrowed to a circular section (3.2mm in diameter). The fragment has a dark green to black patina with old breaks at either end. Based on the curvature of this fragment the estimated original diameter of the whole torc would be approximately 220mm. The find is paralleled by examples found in the 'Near Lewes' hoard in 2011 cf. SUSS-C5D042 which date to the mi…

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, consisting of a section including one complete end (Eogan 1967). The torc has a cruciform (x-shaped) cross-section with four flanges coming to a sub-square terminal where the flanges are only minimally visible. It is bent at a curved right angle shortly before the break at the other end. The complete end is square in cross-section, measuring 2.9x2.8mm. From here the flanges start to become defined and then begin to twist. At the deepest the depth between the flanges is 1.5mm d…

Incomplete copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the Taunton and Penard 'Ornament Horizon' metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age, circa 1400-1150 BC. The present 73mm diameter annular shape is formed from circular-section bronze rod which has been twisted into a spiral. The ends slightly overlap and both have been broken in antiquity. On one of the broken ends the twist and cross-section begins to taper-off suggesting that the break is close to a missing hooked-end terminal. The other end is an abrupt break across full twist and cross-section. The evidence strongly suggests t…
