Incomplete copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the Taunton and Penard 'Ornament Horizon' metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age, circa 1400-1150 BC. The present 73mm diameter annular shape is formed from circular-section bronze rod which has been twisted into a spiral. The ends slightly overlap and both have been broken in antiquity. On one of the broken ends the twist and cross-section begins to taper-off suggesting that the break is close to a missing hooked-end terminal. The other end is an abrupt break across full twist and cross-section. The evidence strongly suggests t…

Circumstances: Found whilst digging trenches through a paddock for gas pipes. No further objects were recovered at the time of discovery, however, the finder states that in recent years the owners have had substantial amounts of topsoil added to level the site. Description: Complete gold Middle Bronze Age four flange twisted bar torc. The main bar has been cut longitudinally to create an X-shaped cross-section and has been twisted relatively evenly. The hoop has been slightly distorted and a number of the crests of the twist have been bent or otherwise damaged. At either end of the tw…

Dimensions: The fragment measures 25.71mm in length, 7.61mm in maximum width 5.72mm thick. The object weighs 6.89g. Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a gold torc fragment indicated a surface composition of approximately 94-97% gold, 3-5% silver, the rest being copper (see appended report for details). Discussion and Date: It was originally belie…

TREASURE CASE 2016 T662. A distorted annular gold hoop of Bronze Age or Iron Age date. The hoop is formed of cylindrical band of sheet metal that is flat in cross section and with no joins apparent. The band has been folded longitudinally to create a central ridge but the whole object is now bent and distorted. There is no decoration on either side of the band. This object is similar to a so-called' dorsal muff' from an Iron Age torc (see NMS-C6DFC1 / 2007 T119 for comparison), but it may also an ornament (such as a hiar or dress accessory) of Middle to Late Bronze Age date however it…

Report to H. M. Coroner on find of potential Treasure: Middle Bronze Age torc fragment (2003 T19) Fragment of one end of a four-flange twisted torc consisting of part of the body and plain terminal; the greater part of the terminal is missing. The break at the terminal end is rough; at the body end the piece appears to have been cut by blow(s) from something like a chisel. It is likely to have been broken, and probably folded, in antiquity. Maximum length (as folded) 24mm; maximum thickness (flange to flange) 8mm; thickness at terminal 5mm, weight 12.95 grams. Identificati…

Treasure case 2016 T203: Acquired by Somerset Museum Service Description: A fragment of Middle Bronze Age flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The torc would have been manufactured from a cast bar into which four longitudinal cuts were made. These were then worked to create an X-shaped cross-section and finally the bar was twisted to create a spiral effect. Only a small portion of the original object survives. The fragment terminates in clean breaks at either end and is likely to have been cut. It has been bent into a U-shape with one terminal projecting upwards and the other bent…

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (Taunton or Penard phase, c. 1400 - 1150 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, consisting of a section including one complete end. It is bent at a curved right angle shortly before the break at the other end. The complete end is square in cross-section, measuring 2.9x2.8mm. From here the flanges start to become defined and then begin to twist. At the deepest the depth between the flanges is 1.5mm deep. At the bend, the fragment measures 4.4x3.8mm in cross-section then narrows to the break where it is very much thinner, measuring 4.8x1.7mm. The fragmen…

Description: The 'East Cambridgeshire' torc is a four-flange twisted bar torc of Middle Bronze Age date, known to belong to the Penard phase of c.1300-1150 BC (Taylor 1980, 62; Needham 2001; Roberts 2007). It is made of three separate components: two very similar, undecorated, bent-back, 'trumpet'-shaped, terminals affixed at either end of an exceptionally long (126.5cms, excluding the terminals) spiral twisted bar with very regular cruciform (i.e. '+' shaped) cross-section. The advantages of casting such an elaborate torc in three pieces is discussed by Taylor (1980, 61-2). A neat c…
