A fragment from a Bronze Age copper-alloy spiral twisted torc. The fragment is formed from a sub-square cross-sectioned bar that has been twisted into a spiral along its length. It is bent into a slight arc and there is a clean, cut break across each end. It survives in fairly good condition with patches of corrosion in places on the surface and no obvious signs of wear. This spiral-twisted style of torc is a feature of the late middle Bronze Age 'ornament horizon', which is now placed in the Taunton and Penard metalwork phases c. 1400-1150 cal BC, with a partic…

A complete, albeit warped, Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the ornament horizon (1400-1250 cal BC). The torc is made of a copper alloy bar that has been bent into a U-shape in profile, the terminals then bent outwards at c.45 and 40 degrees. When in use it would have originally been bent into a more sub-circular shape. The bar is made up of a four flange twisted bar placed between two plain pointed terminals. Both the torc’s terminals survive intact as 40.5mm long plain, circular cross sectioned rods that narrow down their lengths from 6.2mm i…

Incomplete copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the Taunton and Penard 'Ornament Horizon' metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age, circa 1400-1150 BC. The present 73mm diameter annular shape is formed from circular-section bronze rod which has been twisted into a spiral. The ends slightly overlap and both have been broken in antiquity. On one of the broken ends the twist and cross-section begins to taper-off suggesting that the break is close to a missing hooked-end terminal. The other end is an abrupt break across full twist and cross-section. The evidence strongly suggests t…

Fragment of penannular copper alloy middle Bronze Age spiral twisted torc. The fragment is 68.5mm long, 54mm of which is comprised of a twisted spiral with curved peaks (5.8mm thick) and troughs (4.5mm thick), and the remainder is narrowed to a circular section (3.2mm in diameter). The fragment has a dark green to black patina with old breaks at either end. Based on the curvature of this fragment the estimated original diameter of the whole torc would be approximately 220mm. The find is paralleled by examples found in the 'Near Lewes' hoard in 2011 cf. SUSS-C5D042 which date to the mi…

A Middle Bronze Age copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating in the Taunton period (1400-1250BC). It measures 211mm widthways, 193mm longways and is max.14.95mm thick. It weighs 537g, to the nearest 1g. The main body of the torc is square in section with accentuated edges and twisted rather tightly (the torc comprises 29 twists). It is thickest at the centre (14.95x13.78mm) and narrows on either side to 10.33x10.24mm and 10.18x10.49mm. From here the plain, circular-sectioned and flat-ended terminals extend, 9.58mm and 9.36mm in diameter, narrowing to 8.10mm and 8.46mm. Both flat ends…

Curved fragment of a Middle Bronze Age, 1400-1100 BC, copper-alloy twisted ribbon torc. The fragment has six twists with old, patinated, breaks at each end. The twists are slightly tighter at the ends than in the centre and the curve is uneven suggesting it has been bent out of shape. The 'ribbon' is a flattened pointed oval in section with edges which come to a point. The fragment is 64.8mm long, the ribbon varies from 8.0 to 7.3mm wide and is 2.0mm thick. The fragment weighs 8.28 grams. There are two Middle Bronze Age bronze ribbon torcs known from Somerset from the hoards at Edi…
