Copper-alloy 'bag-shaped' scabbard chape, dating to the Late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800BC.
The chape is rounded on the lower edge and flared slightly in thickness. The interior is hollow and upper edge of the front face is damaged. The thickness of the walls is approx. 1.5mm. Both the front and back edges are broken, so that only the lower portion of the chape remains.
The slightly longer back face has two drilled holes present (likely to attachment to a belt), each with an approximate diameter of 2.1mm.
The patina is mostly worn, with some patches of smoother c…

Late Bronze Age copper alloy tongue-shaped chape, 39mm in length, 16mm wide, 6mm thick with a weight of 8.71g.
The object is sub rectangular in form and cross section and represents the lower part of a scabbard chape. It has a rounded , swollen lower edge and its only decoration is a central linear ridge running up each face and terminating in a horizontal projection running along its base. Its upper edge is very damaged and in places it is very thin.
The object belongs to the Wilburton phase (1150-800BC) and similar scabbard chapes can be seen in Savory 1980, page 185, figure 37, nu…

An incomplete copper alloy bag-shaped chape dating to the late Bronze Age (c. 1000-800BC). The chape has an oval opening, concave sides and a rounded base. The opening is chipped along one edge and broken away into the body id the chape on the opposing side. The surface is corroded, with a double-ribbed collar running circumferentially just below the opening, and possible inscised circular decoration on the more degraded face of the object.
A similar, more complete, example can be seen is Leahy and Lewis (2018: 332) from Rockbourne in Hampshire. Other comparable chapes recorded on …

Treasure case 2018 T796. Description: Two fragments of a cast copper alloy chape or scabbard end, dating to late bronze age or, early Iron age c. 1150 - 800 BC. The two remnants are of a short bronze sheath/chape with an approximate total remaining length of 14cm, complete examples are usually 20 to 30 cm long. It is probable that they belonged to swords and not, as their size may suggest, to daggers. This example has a simple mid-ridge with no further decoration nor edge ribbing. The edges are of simple semi-rounded form, and the pieces have a lozenge shaped cross-section.

A complete copper alloy scabbard chape dating to the late Bronze Age, 1150 - 800 BC. The chape is sub triangular or ogival in shape, and lozenge shaped in cross section. At the open end the chape curves upwards into two convex arms, creating a crescent shape. The outside edges curve down gradually to half way down the chape, before narrowing at a more steep angle. The chape terminates with a rounded knop, at the end of which is a circular hole and rivet to attach the knop. Running down the centre of the chape on both sides is a raised ridge, this slopes gradually down to the edge of t…

A copper alloy apparent scabbard chape of uncertain date.
Dot Boughton comments: The patina and shape doesn't quite fit in with Late Bronze Age bag-shaped chapes and is more likely a chape of unknown or post-med date. Other Bronze Age bag-shaped chapes are just a bit more pointed at the top and they are often decorated with a groove or moulding or mouth moulding or even punched circlets, but this example is very plain.

Bag-shaped dagger scabbard chape with three perforations through both faces (five remain blocked by a ferrous deposit). Each perforation lies in the centre of a circular mark on the outer face, probably the result of the drilling process rather than a purposefully made ring. Unusually the mouth is almost straight rather than markedly concave, e.g. an example from Reach, Cambridgeshire (Inventaria Archaeologica (1956) GB 17 3 (3) no. 20). Two examples with pairs of triple perforations but concave mouths come from Quarley, Hants and Norton, Northants (PAS HAMP-095061 and NARC-5DEF37). Bo…

An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, possibly representing part of a scabbard chape.
A piece of sheet-metal has been folded to create a two-sided object with central gap. The outer side, where the fold is located, is angled at approximately 45 degrees, extending into a flat base. From the narrow 'arm' at the top, the upper side flattens out, forming a wide area at the bottom. The surfaces of the angled portion of the chape have a dark blueish-green patination and are pitted; there is a clear break between this and the lower portion, where the metal is lighter green, has lightly inci…

There is a pronounced central rib running along the front and back face. It has a mid-green patina. The artefact is damaged, with recent damage seen on one face in the form of several dents revealing the copper colour below the patina. It is 69.89mm long, 27.40mm wide tapering to 17.69mm, and it is 10.27mm thick tapering to 9.63mm. The walls are 1.35mm thick. It weighs 33.69 grams.

A slightly corroded, damaged cast copper-alloy Late Bronze Age 'bag-shaped' dagger scabbard chape. The object has a rounded end, slightly flattened at the base perhaps through wear. The attachment end has suffered some losses but is broadly U-shaped after a removal, with a raised border. On each side are three punched ring-and-dot motifs in an arc aligned with the attachment end. These bear internal concentric rings as part of the production process. Two of the perforations are filled with corrosion product. The base is thickened from the widest point to the terminal and on the side…

Cast copper alloy spear ferrule. The terminal of the ferrule is rounded, the sides gently expand outwards to form a long cone with a circular cross-section.The walls of the cone are 3.5 mm thick and heavily truncated due to corrosion making it is impossible to determine its original length. This artefact dates to the Bronze Age.

Fragment of Late Bronze Age scabbard chape, cast. A tapering hollow object, both ends missing. The two wide faces are concave on either side of a median arris. Length 40mm, maximum external width 15.5mm, maximum internal width 13.5mm. It is uncertain whether this of a short tongue or long tongue type (Colquhoun in Burgess and Coombs eds. 1979, 109, fig.4.7 nos. 119-21). c.950 – c.750 BC. A very similar fragment was found in Barton Bendish in 2004 (HER 17600).
