The thickness of the walls is approx. 1.5mm. Both the front and back edges are broken, so that only the lower portion of the chape remains.  The slightly longer back face has two drilled holes present (likely to attachment to a belt), each with an approximate diameter of 2.1mm. The patina is mostly worn, with some patches of smoother c…

Treasure case 2018 T796. Description: Two fragments of a cast copper alloy chape or scabbard end, dating to late bronze age or, early Iron age c. 1150 - 800 BC. The two remnants are of a short bronze sheath/chape with an approximate total remaining length of 14cm, complete examples are usually 20 to 30 cm long. It is probable that they belonged to swords and not, as their size may suggest, to daggers. This example has a simple mid-ridge with no further decoration nor edge ribbing. The edges are of simple semi-rounded form, and the pieces have a lozenge shaped cross-section. The shorte…

A copper alloy Late Bronze Age tongue-shaped scabbard chape dating to the period c. 1050 - 800 BC. The chape has tapering sides and is lozengiform in cross-section with a pronounced median rib characteristic of this type of chape. The tip of the chape is rounded and features a circular projection which may be stylistic attempt to copy similar forms which feature washers and bosses on the base. The tip of the chape is solid. It becomes hollow at the point where one side of the chape has broken off due to old damage. Adam Gwilt comments: They are a typical and widespread form dating …

A tinned copper alloy Bronze Age tongue-shaped scabbard chape dating to the period c. 1100 - 800 BC. The chape is triangular in shape with a sub-oval knop at the base. The mouth of the chape is lozengiform. The triangular body features a circular perforation through both sides of the body which retains a cylindrical copper alloy rivet, the terminals of which retain a substantial amount of tinning. The knop at the base features a rough sub-circular perforation as the result of old damage. The chape is hollow with a depth of c. 33.31mm. Cf. SWYOR-4A2F62 for a similar example.

Cast copper alloy chape dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. The chape is related to the tongue-shaped chapes and is part of the Wilburton metalworking industry of the Late Bronze Age. It survives complete and in excellent condition. All surfaces are smooth and of golden-brown colour. It has a diamond-shaped cross section throughout with a probably solid-cast squere at the bottom. There is a small hole on either side to attach it to a scabbard which was probably made from leather. A very similar chape was recorded under SWYOR-4A2F62. NB: The original images were …

A copper alloy apparent scabbard chape of uncertain date. Dot Boughton comments: The patina and shape doesn't quite fit in with Late Bronze Age bag-shaped chapes and is more likely a chape of unknown or post-med date. Other Bronze Age bag-shaped chapes are just a bit more pointed at the top and they are often decorated with a groove or moulding or mouth moulding or even punched circlets, but this example is very plain.

Bag-shaped dagger scabbard chape with three perforations through both faces (five remain blocked by a ferrous deposit). Each perforation lies in the centre of a circular mark on the outer face, probably the result of the drilling process rather than a purposefully made ring. Unusually the mouth is almost straight rather than markedly concave, e.g. an example from Reach, Cambridgeshire (Inventaria Archaeologica (1956) GB 17 3 (3) no. 20). Two examples with pairs of triple perforations but concave mouths come from Quarley, Hants and Norton, Northants (PAS HAMP-095061 and NARC-5DEF37). Bo…
