An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, possibly representing part of a scabbard chape. A piece of sheet-metal has been folded to create a two-sided object with central gap. The outer side, where the fold is located, is angled at approximately 45 degrees, extending into a flat base. From the narrow 'arm' at the top, the upper side flattens out, forming a wide area at the bottom. The surfaces of the angled portion of the chape have a dark blueish-green patination and are pitted; there is a clear break between this and the lower portion, where the metal is lighter green, has lightly inci…

There is a pronounced central rib running along the front and back face. It has a mid-green patina. The artefact is damaged, with recent damage seen on one face in the form of several dents revealing the copper colour below the patina. It is 69.89mm long, 27.40mm wide tapering to 17.69mm, and it is 10.27mm thick tapering to 9.63mm. The walls are 1.35mm thick. It weighs 33.69 grams.

A slightly corroded, damaged cast copper-alloy Late Bronze Age 'bag-shaped' dagger scabbard chape. The object has a rounded end, slightly flattened at the base perhaps through wear. The attachment end has suffered some losses but is broadly U-shaped after a removal, with a raised border. On each side are three punched ring-and-dot motifs in an arc aligned with the attachment end. These bear internal concentric rings as part of the production process. Two of the perforations are filled with corrosion product. The base is thickened from the widest point to the terminal and on the side…

Cast copper alloy spear ferrule. The terminal of the ferrule is rounded, the sides gently expand outwards to form a long cone with a circular cross-section.The walls of the cone are 3.5 mm thick and heavily truncated due to corrosion making it is impossible to determine its original length. This artefact dates to the Bronze Age.

Fragment of Late Bronze Age scabbard chape, cast. A tapering hollow object, both ends missing. The two wide faces are concave on either side of a median arris. Length 40mm, maximum external width 15.5mm, maximum internal width 13.5mm. It is uncertain whether this of a short tongue or long tongue type (Colquhoun in Burgess and Coombs eds. 1979, 109, fig.4.7 nos. 119-21). c.950 – c.750 BC. A very similar fragment was found in Barton Bendish in 2004 (HER 17600).

Incomplete copper alloy sword-chape. Late Bronze Age (1150BC-800BC). Ogival with lozenge shaped cross section, sharp median ribs and flattened edges with a slight rib front and back. The mouth of the chape is wide and open with deeply in-curved upper edges. The butt has a solid oval boss with a convex end. There are three ridges around the sides of the boss. The chape then flares out before curving back in to form an ogee shape and tapering to the round ended, oval sectioned butt. The chape is damaged and incomplete at both top and base and has been broken in two (the pieces were foun…

A cast copper-alloy Late Bronze Age 'bag-shaped' dagger scabbard chape. The object has a rounded end. Because it is abraded at the attachment end it is hard to discern whether or not the 'body' of the chape would have continued up with straight sides. There are six aligned circular perforations near the point of the old break, three on either side. A couple of these chapes are listed in O'Connor (1980, 190-191; ref. 161). They are associated with the 'carp's tongue complex' of south-east England and date to the Ewart Park metalworking phase.

An incomplete bronze bag-shaped chape with two peg holes, measuring 18mm in height, 37mm in width and 10mm in thickness. Three transverse grooves decorated the base of both faces of this chape. One face is incomplete due to ancient, and some more modern, breaks down to the peg hole. The surface condition is reasonably good and patinated dark grey/green with a slight silvery sheen in places. There are areas of pocking and surface loss with paler green corrosion products visible. The top edge of the chape is less pronounced in comparison to other East Anglian examples, e.g those in the L…

Late Bronze Age scabbard chape, relating to the family of tongue-shaped chapes and dating to between 1100-800 BC. The chape would have fitted onto the end of a sword scabbard. The mouth of the chape is diamond shaped and this tapers to join a larger circular, flat terminal. About two thirds of the way down the chape are two small circular perforations on each side, possibly for riveting to the scabbard. The chape is undecorated and in good condition. The object weighs 46g and measures 64.46mm in length and 28.35mm in width (across the chape mouth).
