A cast copper alloy ring, with a thick D-shaped section. There are no markings on the exterior or the interior of the finger ring. No joint is visible. Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date probably of later prehistoric Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 BC – 50 AD), however there is some possibility that it may date from the Roman period (50 – 410 AD). The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 26.6mm in diameter, is 5.7mm wide, and is 5.9mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 15.1mm. The ring weighs 12.07 grams. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed and heavily polished patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decor…

A cast copper alloy ring of probable later prehistoric date - Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 – 300 BC). There is some debate as to the function of these decorated rings, in that some have been described as personal ornaments associated with articles of dress whilst others have described them as being associated with harness fittings. The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 31.2mm in diameter, is 7.6mm wide, and is 5.5mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 16.4mm. The ring weighs 14.55 grams. Both faces o…

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date. The thick plain ring has the remains of tinning, though the copper alloy surface is quite worn and abraded. It is difficult to date this object without a context or even suggest a function. The external diameter is 19.0mm, the internal diameter is 8.8mm and the weight is 6.07g.

Copper alloy Ring fragment. About half of a cast round-section ring, slightly flattened buy hammering on its upper and lower surfaces. One end is broken, the other flat, apparently as made, suggesting this to be a fragment of an originally penannular object. The object is too small and thick to qualify as a member of the common class of harness rings or brooches, and is possibly a fragment of a Prehistoric object, such as a penannular base metal ring, or the base metal core of a ring of precious metal (though if the latter, no trace of precious metal remains). Suggested date: …

Cast copper alloy ring, probably a harness or suspension loop. The ring is circular in section and decorated with two transverse grooves of the outside. The remains of a casting seam can be seen on the inside, but this has mostly been polished away. It has a external diameter of 15.8mm and an internal diameter of 8.7mm. The hole is slightly off centre and the wider side is also thicker; at the maximum point the side is 4.5mm wide by 4.8mm thick and at the minimum point it is 2.6mm wide by 3.3mm thick. It weighs 3.4 grams. Although Bronze Age-Roman cast copper alloy beads with similar …

Solid cast cu-alloy ring, possibly dating from the Later Bronze or Iron Age or the Roman period, i.e. c. 1000BC-AD410. The ring is simple without any decoration. It was cast in a two-piece mould and not made from a bent cu-alloy rod. The surface is very smooth and the file marks from the filing of the inner casting seam are almost obliterated. There are no longer any indications of casting seams or file marks on the outside. The ring is in very good condition with a chocolate-brown patina and there is only very little stippling/pitting on the outer surface. Cu-alloy rings such as this …

A large cast copper-alloy ring of possible Bronze to Iron Age date. It is circular in form and section, with a slight circumferential ridge and visible use-wear on the interior surface of one side. The object has a dark brown patina and measures 38.98mm in external diameter, 20.66mm in internal diameter, 10.44mm in thickness, and weighs 49.70g. The precise function of this object remains uncertain. Similar copper-alloy rings are noted from a Late Bronze Age hoard in Essex (Cuddeford and Sealey, 2000: 1-17, especially no. 46) and it is possible that the current example is of Late Bro…

This object was originally identified by Alan West as a Bronze Age ear-ring, and described as an annular ear-ring with diamond cross-section, chevron pattern incised on outer faces. Re-examination of the photograph now suggests that the ring is either penannular or broken, and Neil Wilkin (British Museum) has advised that it is unlikely to be an ear-ring. The dating as Bronze Age is uncertain.

Possibly Late Bronze Age or Iron Age copper alloy ring, slightly damaged (a small chunk is missing). It is triangular in section, the inside surface being a smooth curve from one side to the other while the outside surface has a slight rib running around it. It is 25mm in diameter (internal 12.8mm) and weighs 12.63g. At least seven other examples of triangular-section rings with curved inner edges have been recorded from Wiltshire in the past few years. They are thought to date to the Late Iron Age period and possibly linked to harness. This example is rather chunkier and may date ea…

Copper alloy ring with a smooth, shiny, browny-grey patina. The inside edge curves outwards to meet the outside edge, which is ridged. These ridges stand 2.5-3mm high, and 1mm prominent from the ring. They appear to be closely spaced and thin, becoming wider and more spaced out around the ring. There is a clean break across the ring, and leaving a 1mm wide gap. However, this seems to have been 'filled in' on the outer edge, whether by corrosion or human intervention. The internal diameter is 18m, external 25mm. Possibly Iron Age or even Bronze Age in date, and possibly a finger-ring. C…

An unusual and incomplete ring of unknown date. It is made of a light material, probably bone or antler, or possibly shale as it is very dark in colour. The ring is D-shaped in section, being flat inside. The outside edge has been worked to give diagonal ribs extending from one edge to the other. Approximately half the ring has a layer consisting of over half the depth of the ring, 'shaved' off it. The structure below this is similar to bone. It is 28.5mm in diameter (internal 16.5mm), 8.5mm thick and weighs 2.12g. Because of the slightly crude workmanship and choice of material, a pre…
