Description
Two joining fragments form a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. The whole is heavily disfigured by buckling and denting, including a sharp bend at the break Both ends are neatly squared suggesting that the complete object is present. One of the terminals is emphasised by a slight external beading. Prior to damage, the back would have been flat, while the front carries twenty-four very finely incised grooves aligned longitudinally.
Extant lengths 60.5 & 41.5 mm Length stretched out c.117 mm width c. 17.5 mm thickness c. 0.5 mm weights 6.1 & 3.6 g

The strip has been severed at both ends, one edge straight and the other ragged. A small fragment has broken off the larger object.
The larger fragment measures 23.06 mm in length, 8.06 mm wide and 7.74 mm thick. The strip is 0.81 mm thick. It weighs 1.2 g. The smaller fragment measures 5.81 mm in length, 4.0…

Fragment of probable Middle or Late Bronze Age gold rectangular strip with two perforations at one end (which comes to a relatively irregular terminal but which appears to have been original rather than broken) and a flat, formal terminal at the other end. The upper side of the strip is decorated with a series of sixteen horizontal, incised lines. The reverse side of the strip is undecorated with some distortion while the upper side is scratched and discoloured in places. The strip is slightly contorted along its length. One end of the strip has two holes which, from the recesses evid…

A small rectangular fragment of Bronze Age gold, truncated by probable cuts at either end, dating to 2,400-800 BC. The front of the fragment is moulded into five parallel ribs, with an incised zig-zag on the sides of each rib, except for those on the external edges. The reverse is plain.
Dimensions: length 15.9mm; width 9.7mm; thickness 1.5mm; weight 2.48g.
Discussion: The fragment can be compared to other ribbed gold strips identified as Bronze Age ribbons and recorded on the PAS database, cf. HAMP-36C41B; NLM-9CECFC; WMID-3CBCF0; WAW-C0C0B3.

CORONER'S REPORT
A Bronze Age gold ribbon fragment from Ansley, Warwickshire.
Circumstances of discovery
A gold ribbon ornament was found by Mr Simon Hall whilst metal detecting in August 1999 on the cultivated land owned by Mr Dave Goadby. The find did not appear to have any accompanying material though a pebble track heading in the general direction of the find had been ploughed out in living memory.
Description of object
1. Gold ribbon fragment. The object is a gold fragment of a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. One end is neatly broken forming a straight edge whilst…

A fragment of an incomplete gold band or ribbon of rectangular shape, now in two pieces, of Bronze Age date (2100 BC - 1150 BC).
Description: The parallel sided strip of gold has twelve (possibly thirteen) embossed longitudinal lines visible on both faces, giving a corrugated effect. Both ends appear to be breaks, and the strip has broken into two pieces post-recovery. Both long edges are folded making a thicker edge. About 2.6mm - 2.8mm of the sheet is folded over on each edge. This flange is damaged and partially missing on one long edge, and partially unfolded. There is s…

A parcel of folded gold strips or ribbons of probable Bronze Age date. The parcel appears to comprise two separate strips of differing lengths. The shorter has been folded once and the longer has six folds. The shorter fragment has a rounded terminal with a raised edge and measures 8.91mm in width. There are no signs of additional decoration.
Discussion: This may be a ribbon form bracelet or similar adornment which has been scrapped and folded for remelting.
Dimensions: Length 9.6mmmm; width 8.91mm; weight 1.18g.

A length of gold ribbon, apparently complete. Both long sides taper gradually towards a rounded terminal which is now hooked over. The corners of the opposite end are both bent over and flattened. Multiple transverse ridges suggest that the ribbon has been folded multiply at some point in its life and then rolled flat again. No ornament is present.
Dimensions: Length 44.84mm; width 11.12mm; weight 1.83g.

A fragment of a strip of ribbon gold, dating to the Bronze Age c. 2200 - 800 BC. One side is covered with parallel grooves running along its length, the other is undecorated. The original width of the strip would have been 8.5mm and it is 0.5mm thick. The fragment has been folded diagonally across its width and is now triangular in shape; it is unclear whether this is intentional or simply the result of post-depositional damage. One end has been neatly cut across the width, the other is less regularly cut or torn. The cut suggests a process of re-use or recycling of the original ribbo…

A small fragment of gold strip tapering to a tongue-shaped terminal, where it has been pierced, slightly off-centre. The piercing has been carried out from the slightly less dull side. The piece is very weathered, and there is some cracking across the width where it seems to have been folded. Surviving length 38.5mm; maximum surviving width 10.5mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.63 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of 84-87 %, silver content of 10-13 %, the remainder being copper. The fragment is part of a larger piece, whi…

Treasure case 2017 T882;
Description: Bead possibly formed from a fragment of a gold band or ribbon dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2200-800 BC). The fragment is a short length of a straight, parallel sided strip with both ends bent back on themselves so the ends meet, probably originally making a cylindrical bead. This has then been squashed flat. The back (interior) is plain and the front is decorated with 20 regularly spaced parallel ribs, and 18 grooves between them, running along the entire length of the fragment.

A fragment of gold, possibly from a bracelet or torc surviving as an undecorated oval/ellipse shaped band that tapers to the shoulders of probable terminals that may have been broken (the breaks are not conclusive). The terminals appear to have been twisted prior to the purported breaks (possibly in the process of breaking them). The band has several bends and distortions and it is not clear what the original profile of the band would have been. There are a number of scuffs and striations to both surfaces. Possible small hammer markings can be seen, particularly on one side of the ban…

Folded gold strip or diadem. Soil remains wedged between layers. The object has been folded up and consists of 5-6 layers. The tapering tip of one end of the strip is visible on the outside of the folded bundle. Lines of pointillé decoration run along both edges of the strip and meet at the terminal. A folded fragment from a gold strip dating to the Bronze Age c.1500-800 BCE.
A flat gold sheet that has been folded flat against itself over 180 degrees. One original terminal survives which ends in a curved convex edge. The opposite terminal of the fragment ends in a clean transverse break. The outer surface of the sheet has incised decoration consisting of 10 parallel lines that run the length of the object taking up its entire width. This creates a ridged design. The reverse is plain although traces of the upper design’s creation are faintly visible.

TREASURE CASE 2018 T373. Description: An incomplete strip of decorated gold, of probable Bronze Age dating (c. 2150 BC to c. 1150 BC). The strip is an oval/ellipse shaped band that tapers towards the possible terminals. The terminals have a corrugated appearance consisting of three or four peaks and troughs, each created length-ways for approximately one quarter of the object's length.
