A small fragment of gold strip tapering to a tongue-shaped terminal, where it has been pierced, slightly off-centre. The piercing has been carried out from the slightly less dull side. The piece is very weathered, and there is some cracking across the width where it seems to have been folded. Surviving length 38.5mm; maximum surviving width 10.5mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.63 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of 84-87 %, silver content of 10-13 %, the remainder being copper. The fragment is part of a larger piece, whi…

A gold fragment of parallel sided strip or ribbon. The ribbon is rectangular in plan and made from a sheet of gold. One side of the ribbon is decorated with four regular, longitudinal, incised grooves. The other side of the ribbon is plain with some light scratches. The ribbon is slightly contorted indicating that the ribbon may have been folded and then un-folded. The damage is not new. One end has a neat, flat-ended terminal with sharp 90 degree corners implying the original finish. There is a circular perforation located 1.54mm from this end of the ribbon which is slightly off-cent…

The reverse side of the strip is undecorated with some distortion while the upper side is scratched and discoloured in places. The strip is slightly contorted along its length. A fragment of gold, possibly from a bracelet or torc surviving as an undecorated oval/ellipse shaped band that tapers to the shoulders of probable terminals that may have been broken (the breaks are not conclusive). The terminals appear to have been twisted prior to the purported breaks (possibly in the process of breaking them). The band has several bends and distortions and it is not clear what the original profile of the band would have been. There are a number of scuffs and striations to both surfaces. Possible small hammer markings can be seen, particularly on one side of the ban…

Chased gold ribbon ornament, folded in antiquity, perhaps to produce a bead if originally cylindrical or wrapped around leather, textile or hair to create a decorative toggle, tag or 'tress-ring'. The ribbon is only 2 mm thick, and if unfolded would be semi-circular in plan with one edge deliberately and symmetrically rounded and the other edge straight. The straight edge seems not to have been sheared off from something longer, but instead has been evenly and neatly cut to create the size that was needed. The maker has used a sharp chisel or a tool like a modern chasing punch to crea…

Gold ribbon. Penannular fragment of gold foil or thin sheet with a border along its edges and at one end, and decorated with three densely billeted longitudinal ribs in relief. One end of the object is lost, and a crack runs across what remains near its mid point. This probably falls into a class of personal ornaments for the hair or ears; WAW-COC0B3 provides a class parallel. Suggested date: Middle to Late Bronze Age, 1300-800 BC. In view of its age and material this object is to be submitted to the Treasure process, Treasure reference 2014 T534.. Length (as found): 12.4mm, Widt…

Two fragments of apparently originally-joining gold band or ribbon dating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age (c. 1600-800 BC). Both fragments are parallel-sided and of rectangular shape, the smaller fragment having a jagged break at either end and the longer having one jagged break and one straight cut. Both are slightly crumpled. The fragments are decorated on one face with fourteen raised ribs and corresponding grooves. The long edges of each also appear a little folded-over in places. The opposite faces are plain. Discussion: The incised linear decoration of the strip can be par…

Description Two joining fragments form a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. The whole is heavily disfigured by buckling and denting, including a sharp bend at the break Both ends are neatly squared suggesting that the complete object is present. One of the terminals is emphasised by a slight external beading. Prior to damage, the back would have been flat, while the front carries twenty-four very finely incised grooves aligned longitudinally. Description: Gold unidentified ornament of Bronze Age date. The object consists of a strip of sheet gold formed into the shape of a pointed oval. At either end, the long edges of the band have been folded inwards in order to create the pointed terminals. Near the tip of each terminal is a circular perforation. Both perforations are now blocked with soil. Dimensions: Length: 21.9mm, width: 4.6mm, thickness: 1.6mm, weight: 1.2g.
