A fragment of a bronze rapier blade, other fragments of this rapier have been previously found in 2005 and 1992, see MNL 559 and MNL 446, in Suffolk SMR. This fragment is middle Bronze Age in date and measures 93mm in length, 22mm in width. One of the breaks on this fragment may be recent but the other is ancient. There is considerable recent linear scraping along the faces, probably due to agricultural damage, there is also some limited recent damage to the blade edges, though irregular notching appears ancient, possibly resulting from corrosion. The breaks therefore show no e…

The butt end of a bronze rapier of dirk with remains of four side notches under the domed (convex) butt edge. The rapier is marked mainly diagonally from one direction with abrasive cleaning and sharpening incisions. Very little surface corrosion and a medium-deep brown patination. The breaks at the blade end and smaller loss at butt end both look fairly ancient, though traces of corriosn at the blade end may mask the colour of the break so it may be more recent. There are also recent plough grazes on one face. It is 29.5mm in incomplete length, 29mm in width and 2mm in thickness.…

Cast cu-alloy rapier blade dating from the Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1500-1250BC. It is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham’s (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The hilt (which was made from perishable material such as antler, wood or bone) is missing and so are the rivets with which it was attached to the blade. The blade itself was very thinly cast and is very worn today.

Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy rapier fragment, 1400-1150BC. Hilt and upper part of the blade only. The hilt is broken across both rivet holes. No mid-rib on the blade. The blade edges are missing. Well-defined edge bevels 5.3mm from the surviving edge of the blade (where the thickness is 2.5mm). The cross-section at the break appears to be flat (the original surface is missing but the core is flat). The blade is slightly bent and transversely cracked on both sides, about 30mm from the rivet holes. Only patches of original surface survive – that on one side is mid green, while t…
