An incomplete copper alloy Bronze Age dirk or rapier blade, probably dating to 1400-1100 BC. It is sub-triangular in plan and has a longitudinal narrow rib at the centre of both faces. The tip breaks at the tapered end where it bents slightly. The long edges are heavily damaged and have a bevel on both faces. The base of the blade has a central extending tang, which is flanked by the remains of two rivet holes. The thickness of the blade is almost uniform throughout. The surfaces are heavily worn even though large part of the object still has a greenish dark brown patina. The be…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy modified/shortened dirk or rapier dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1300 BC. This example falls into Burgess and Gerloff's group II, 'dirks with damaged or ill-formed blades modified for rehafting'. The dirk itself is missing the tip of its blade, but is otherwise preserved intact. Demonstrating a squared off thickened butt with two semi-circular notches (one on each face) cut into each side to facilitate hafting, The blade itself is lenticular in section with a broad, flattened midrib on each side. Preserved in fair condition with a patchy gree…

The tip from an incomplete cast copper-alloy object or blade, perhaps a rapier, of Bronze Age date. The surviving fragment is triangular in form with oval mid rib and flattened narrow blades to each side. It tapers to a sharp point at one end, and terminates in old breaks at the other. All surfaces have a pitted dark green patina. This fragment measures 42.87mm in length, 9.48mm in width, 3.62mm in thickness, and 3.58g in weight. This is the tip from an incomplete bladed object. The lack of socket and the fineness/narrowness of the blade might suggest it is from an object such as a…

An incomplete copper-alloy rapier of Bronze Age date. Part of the butt end and base of the blade survive intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The butt end is rectangular in form, oval sectioned and with the remains of two incomplete rivet holes. It flares slightly towards the shoulders before tapering to the rectangular blade that is oval in section and has a flat mid rib. The entire object has worn surfaces that have suffered from extensive post-depositional damage resulting in most of the dark green patina being removed. Both surfaces have some pitting and corrosion …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy blade fragment of Bronze Age date. Only a short length of the blade survives intact, terminating at both ends in old breaks and with extensive post-depositional damage and corrosion to the cutting edges. It is flat, rectangular in form and pointed oval shaped in section with a flattened rectangular midrib visible on both faces. At one end where the fragment terminates in old breaks it is bent slightly forwards, perhaps indicating deliberate breakage of the object in antiquity or more recent post-depositional damage. It has a dark green patina that has a…

It is rectangular in from, tapering to a rounded tip, and lozenge shaped in section with a slightly raised central rib. A fragment of a bronze rapier blade, other fragments of this rapier have been previously found in 2005 and 1992, see MNL 559 and MNL 446, in Suffolk SMR. This fragment is middle Bronze Age in date and measures 93mm in length, 22mm in width. One of the breaks on this fragment may be recent but the other is ancient. There is considerable recent linear scraping along the faces, probably due to agricultural damage, there is also some limited recent damage to the blade edges, though irregular notching appears ancient, possibly resulting from corrosion. The breaks therefore show no e…

A bronze blade fragment of a rapier with a stepped blade cross-section. The fragment is incomplete at both ends one break is ancient with a detached flake scar and the other is also probably ancient but masked by pale green corrosion products, there is no sign of bending or hammer marks at the breaks. Both edges are damage, in one case mainly by corrosion, in the other by corroison and a recent bending over of the edge. There are numerous recent grazes to both faces of the blade and areas of markedly green corrosion. Elsewhere the reapier is patinated a pale to medium green/brown. …

Short, very narrow, length of the blade from a copper alloy rapier with fluted blade cross-section. Multiple hammer marks and bending demonstrate deliberate breakage - which suggests the incorporation of a middle Bronze Age rapier into a late Bronze Age hoard. Dark deep brown patina. No obvious recent damage. The blade edge, where it srvives undamaged, is slightly rounded and relatively blunt. Surviving length 21mm, width 16mm, thickness 6mm. It should be noted that a bronze gouge has also been found (in 1993) on this mainly Iron Age/Roman site.
