Three pot boiler fragments, probably of Bronze Age to Iron Age date. All fragments of the burnt amortize pebble are fractured, which may have be caused by exposure to heat. They all show signs of burning and have craze cracking.

An egg-shaped pebble of white flint or chert with a large area of off-white cortex remaining. The remaining cortex is crazed with fine cracks over its surface. The underlying flint or chert has larger, deeper cracks passing through the body of the pebble. This is almost certainly due to thermal action and suggests that the pebble was used as a pot-boiler. It is unusual, however, to use flint or chert in this way as it has a tendancy to explode. The pebble was found in association with late Neolithic and Bronze-Age deposits and probably dates to the Bronze-Age.

Sandstone burnt stone. One half of a river-rounded Sandstone cobble, possibly flattened by use as a rubber or hone on one side, reddened by heat which has promoted splitting on the putative flat or polished side. The use of stones to heat water – for what purpose is the topic of speculation, ranging from cooking to bathing of the better sort – is especially characteristic of the later Bronze Age. Of course, stones could be heated or incorporated into hearths and campfires  and water boiled at any later date as well. Suggested date: possibly Late Bronze Age to Iron Age,…

Piece of fire-cracked stone, so-called 'pot-boiler', The fragment came from a quartzite cobble which was shattered when heated and dropped into water. Part of the original surface survives and bears traces of crazed cracking, the other faces show a hackly fracture and the rock shows some signs of reddening. Length 42.6mm, Width 42.6mm, Thickness 35.0mm, Mass 68.96g Stones like these were used in the heating of large quantities of water in wooden troughs. They are known from Bronze Age contexts but also occure on Early Medieval sites.
