Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete plano-convex knife, made from a hard hammer struck tertiary flake of good quality dark grey/black flint with minimal patination, the ventral surface remains blank; as struck, the dorsal face has been extensively and invasively pressure flaked, the distal end of the knife is broken transversely across a thinner, weaker section of the knife. Early Bronze Age, 2,350-1,500 BC.

Plano-convex knife, reshaped from an earlier (most likely Neolithic) hard hammer struck tertiary blade-like flake; the original surfaces of the earlier struck flint are patinated (to the dorsal face) slightly misty blue grey with the occasional spotty iron stain, the ventral face is much paler where the patination has leeched in more successfully, much of the lateral edges and the point have been carefully pressure flaked during the Early Bronze Age to convert the flake to the plano-convex knife, These flake scars are neatly flaked in sequence (pattern pressure flaked), especially to o…

A complete flint plano convex knife of early to early middle Bronze Age date, made from a semi circular tertiary flake of dark brown flint, 90.2mm in length. The knife has patches of intrusive low angle pressure flaked retouch on the convex edge and a intrusive and semi abrupt long and short scaled retouch on the straight edge. The distal end appears broken and uneven. The bulbar scar has some low angle removals, but otherwise the ventral surface is unworked.

Plano-convex flint knife, of typical uniface design; the dorsal face is knapped to an asymmetrical leaf shape, unusually in this instance by direct and invasive soft hammer percussion as opposed to pressure flaking, the ventral face is left as struck from the core, the bulb of percussion has a bulbul scar, an indication of being hard hammer struck from the core, most of the platform has been reduced in the process of working the upper (dorsal) face but the point of striking remains extant. Parts of both lateral edges are irregularly “retouched” to an extremely blunt angle and are …

Dark grey flint with re-formed cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, plano-convex knife. A short bar-shaped flint with long invasive angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. The ventral side of the cutting edge bears a crescentic crystalline hackled zone, and similarly distinctive damage appears along the opposite long edge. The lack of subsequent patination may hint that the object was subsequently incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Grey flint plano-convex knife fragment. A plano-convex rod fragment with a rounded end at the site of a bulb on its otherwise flat ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears on the dorsal side; broken recently. The lack of patina may hint this was incorporated into a sealed deposit. Elongated semi-hard hammer (large bulb, no bulbal scar) struck blade, of unpatinated mid-grey flint with light and dark streak running the length of the flake. Both lateral edges have been extensively pressure flaked to the dorsal face only to form the plano-convex knife, one side has a shallow notch at the midpoint. Early Bronze Age, 2,350 to 1,500 BC.

Honey tinted flint plano-convex knife fragment. Tip of a small plano-convex knife. Long narrow parallel flakes have been struck from the dorsal side while there is a small bulb at the end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Slight misty patina developed, suggesting a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the converging long edges, removing this light patina. Broken, probably recently, at its wider end. A complete plano convex flint knife of late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, c. 2700-1600 BC. Formed from a secondary flake, the object is sub-rectangular in shape, and plano-convex in cross section. It is formed of a dark grey flint, with no patinisation on the surface. The proximal end has been carefully texturised in order to create a consistent squared finish. There is invasive retouch pressure flaking covering almost the entirety of the dorsal face, with the bulb of percussion clearly visible on the ventral face. An additional removal is visible adjacent to the bulb of percu…

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c.2700 BC to c.1600 BC) plano-convex knife: The knapped flint knife is an elongated asymmetrical pointed-oval with a truncated proximal end. The knife has a sub D-shaped cross section and was probably knapped from a secondary flake/debitage. The flint the knife is knapped from is a mottled dark grey colour. The dorsal surface has stepped retouch covering the surface with abrupt re-touch along the edges, thereby forming a convex surface. The ventral surface has no re-touch on the surface, just one shallow scar, obliquely angled at the proximal e…

Two Plano-convex knives, one larger and complete, the smaller seems to be transversely broken just below the proximal end. The complete example is sub-triangular in plan, with the bulb orientated at one side of base, it is made from a secondary hard hammer struck flake of unpatinated mottled grey flint with invasive pressure flakes to both lateral edges on the dorsal face only, leaving only a small patch of cortex mid-way towards the (elongated) tip. 61 x 26 x 10 mm. 13 g. Plano-convex knife, of sub-rectangular plan form, finely, and invasively pressure flaked from a secondary, hard hammer struck blade-like flake of good quality mottled grey flint, now patinated slightly by iron oxides, most noticeably to one lateral edge near the middle. The opposing edge has the distal end of a previously struck, hinge terminated flake that was present in the dorsal surface before the blade-like flake was struck, and this has been modified into a small notch by steep, non-invasive retouch to the ventral face. The bulb of percussion has been removed to form a chisel-li…

Grey-brown flint plano-convex knife. A small thick straight-sided flake with covering angled scalar retouch and a flat to very slightly concave ventral surface; the scars are mostly parallel, which might be considered a trait of Mesolithic work as might the concave underside, though the object type here is of the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.
