A fine-grained hammerstone or pestle, sub-rectangular in plan and section and ovate in profile. It is slightly wider at its distal end but fits comfortably in the hand however it is held and appears to have been used to exploit several of its surfaces for different purposes. The slightly flattened ventral face is pecked and uneven, suggesting use as a hammerstone; the distal end is smooth and the right side of the implement, when viewed from the ventral face, is flat and smooth, and it is likely that both of these surfaces have been used for grinding as a pestle. At the junction betwe…

Small fine-grained granite pestle, cylindrical in profile and circular in plan and section, with two convex ends. The pestle has been worked by pounding at both ends, probably on a hard surface, resulting in considerable abrasion and the loss of material in the order of a centimetre (Dr Roger Taylor pers comm). The length of the tool still fits perfectly within a hand's grip. There are dark grey patches on the surface of the pestle and fine grains of felspar and mica. The pestle would have been used with a mortar or cupped stone, but this tool was found on its own in the field, in an …

Coarse-grained gabbro cobble with heavy use as a pestle around most of the perimeter (Henrietta Quinnell forthcoming). The pestle is round in plan, with two rounded sides, and plano-convex in section. The pestle is flat and smooth on the face that was used for rubbing, and more convex on the opposite face, where it was held and pushed across a base or mortar for grinding. The gabbro is a coarse-grained variety, probably from Cudden Point, Perranuthnoe, about 4 miles across Mounts Bay (Jens Andersen pers comm), containing pale pink felspars and dark grey pyroxene inclusions. The soft f…
