A fragment of a cast copper alloy ingot or 'cake' possibly dating from the Bronze Age period (c. 2100-1500 BC). The object is irregular in plan and curved in profile with one smooth concave face and a rough uneven outer convex face. The outer face is rough and pitted. The edges of the object are uneven and rough but with an even patina due to breaks during antiquity. The object has a light green patina and is probably the result of metal working. The colour, texture, shape and formation of the ingot suggests that it may date from the Bronze age period, however without metallurgical…

Possibly a casting jet or well dating from the Late Bronze Age period, that is 1000-800BC. The broken lower end of the well suggests the object being cast was a knife, possibly a knife with a handle plate rather than socket like the Late Bronze Age Thorndon type knives. Recorded examples of knives without cast socket handles are known from East Anglia, Somerset and Wiltshire (NMS-27C352, GLO-71F6AF, SOM-EE6135).

TREASURE CASE 2011 T801: Five ingot fragments of copper alloy metal working waste. All five pieces have traces of a bright green patina although there has been some notable loss of this patination revealing purplish-brown patches. Most sides of the fragments are uneven and irregular with notable pitting and striations on most surfaces. Ingot Fragment 1: 967.2g, 37.2mm thick (tapering to 22.9mm), 89.3mm long and 66.2mm wide. In plan the fragment is rounded on two sides, with the other two sides being more irregular and abruptly angled in form. The base of the fragment is roughly fla…

A cast copper alloy casting jet of Late Bronze Age to Modern date (1150 BC – 1900). The object is roughly funnel-shaped and has an irregular shaped head with a rough and uneven surface. At the centre of the underside there is a single sprue (feeder). The end of the feeder, in the form of an old break, is sub-circular in cross-section and as it rises towards the head the shape becomes sub-oval. The piece generally has a rough pitted surface with traces of a mid to dark brown patina. 18.9 x 18.0 x 15.9mm. Weight: 9.06g. It is possible that this casting jet is later than the Bronze Age.

A cast copper alloy casting jet of possible Bronze Age date (2150 BC – 800 BC). Length: 26.7mm; width: 29.9mm and 19.0mm thick. Weight: 32.68g. The object is roughly funnel-shaped and in plan has a flat sub-oval concave head, the surface of which is irregular and pitted. This uneven surface was probably created when the molten metal was solidifying. On the underside there is a pair of sprue elements (feeders). Each feeder is in the form of a long stub which is both turned inwards at the ends. The piece has a mid-dark green patina. It is possible that this casting jet is later than…
