All surfaces are uneven with vesicles and small black flecks of charcoal & some shiny gold & silver coloured flecks incorporated. A cast copper alloy ingot or 'cake' probably dating from the Bronze Age period. The object is sub-oval in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. One surface of the object is flat and smooth although pitted. The other faces of the object are irregular in form and with larger pits. The molten copper alloy would have been poured into a mould, and allowed to cool until it was solid. The undulating lower surface represents the formation of air pockets. The colour, texture, shape and formation of the ingot suggests that it may date from the Bronze age period, however without metallurg…

All five pieces have traces of a bright green patina although there has been some notable loss of this patination revealing purplish-brown patches. Most sides of the fragments are uneven and irregular with notable pitting and striations on most surfaces. Ingot Fragment 1: 967.2g, 37.2mm thick (tapering to 22.9mm), 89.3mm long and 66.2mm wide. In plan the fragment is rounded on two sides, with the other two sides being more irregular and abruptly angled in form. The base of the fragment is roughly fla…

Copper alloy This object was originally suggested to be a possible Mount, from furniture or a box of Roman date. Peter Reavill kindly offers an alternative identification of the object as a casting well with runners from an episode of metalworking dating from between Later Prehistory (circa 1500 BC) to the end of the Roman period. The object was described as follows: Cast oval plano-convex object with a pair of angled lugs projecting from its upper surface. Other surface irregularities may represent further elements of a decorative scheme, though the abraded and knobbly surface might…

A probable Late Bronze Age (1100 BC - 800 BC) fragment of casting sprue, weighing 6.3g. It is oval in cross-section and measures 15.34x10.95 at the wider end, which has a rough surface. The sprue narrows over 14.97mm to an old break 8.64x3.82mm. The sprue forms in the channels of the mould through which molten metal is poured in the process of casting, and which subsequently hardens and is removed. Although the colour of the metal suggests a Bronze Age date, it could conceivably date later.

Five pieces of copper alloy of various size. The pieces were found over 20 years ago near Bronze Age items including axes which were previously on display in Arundel Museum and a chisel (SUSS-00F4DA). Ben Roberts (Curator of Bronze Age material, British Museum) commented that none of the five were distincly Bronze Age in form and all of them may be Bronze Age or equally may be later pieces. They all appear to have been formed from molton copper alloy. Piece 1: roughly oval plano-convex piece with a rough, flat bottom and slightly smoother domed top. One edge has been cut off flat in…

A lump of solidified molton copper. It has a flat base and a domed top. It has been cut on two, opposite sides; one is a straighter, clean cut; and there is evidence of sooting to three sides. The object is 32.8mm long, 20.5mmwide and 17.8mm thick. It weighs 47.71gms. This was part of either a small ingot or a lump of molton copper formed in something like a crucible. It was probably carried in this form from elsewhere as travelling metal workers and traders would often carry lumps of metal around for forming on the site where objects were needed. It's lack of distincive form makes i…

A large lump of copper, it's rounded appearence suggests it has cooled from molton metal in a crucible or other mould. One side is almost flat, the top is domed and the sides rounded, it may originally have been oval as it appears to have been cut on one face, the cut is now worn. It may have been made on site or have been carried here for metal working. It is difficult to give this item an exact date although study of the composition might help, a date of Bronze Age - post-medieval has thus been given although it is likely to sit within the earlier part of this range. It is 38.8mm l…
