Selection of casting waste and metal working debries made of copper alloy including sprues, mis-cast pieces, a large rough cast piece with many air bubbles that may come from a crucible, several solid cast triangular pieces, probably sprues and a rectangular bar marked into sections with incised lines. The pieces may relate to one period of activity or to several periods. None are distinctinve in age although the the bar appears possibly Post Medieval or Modern while the rough cast piece appears possibly older. It was not possible in the time to record all the pieces seperately but th…

Copper alloy casting jet with stubs of two runners. The jet is flat topped, roughly circular with a domed lower part. While such jets are commonly the result of socketed axe production in the Late Bronze Age they can also be as late as the ost medieval period. It is 36.0 by 31.2mm and 17.6mm thick excluding the runners, 21.5mm including them; the runners are c.8mm in diameter at the base amd it weighs 69 grams.

Five pieces of copper alloy of various size. The pieces were found over 20 years ago near Bronze Age items including axes which were previously on display in Arundel Museum and a chisel (SUSS-00F4DA). Ben Roberts (Curator of Bronze Age material, British Museum) commented that none of the five were distincly Bronze Age in form and all of them may be Bronze Age or equally may be later pieces. They all appear to have been formed from molton copper alloy. Piece 1: roughly oval plano-convex piece with a rough, flat bottom and slightly smoother domed top. One edge has been cut off flat in…

A lump of solidified molton copper. It has a flat base and a domed top. It has been cut on two, opposite sides; one is a straighter, clean cut; and there is evidence of sooting to three sides. The object is 32.8mm long, 20.5mmwide and 17.8mm thick. It weighs 47.71gms. This was part of either a small ingot or a lump of molton copper formed in something like a crucible. It was probably carried in this form from elsewhere as travelling metal workers and traders would often carry lumps of metal around for forming on the site where objects were needed. It's lack of distincive form makes i…

A large lump of copper, it's rounded appearence suggests it has cooled from molton metal in a crucible or other mould. One side is almost flat, the top is domed and the sides rounded, it may originally have been oval as it appears to have been cut on one face, the cut is now worn. It may have been made on site or have been carried here for metal working. It is difficult to give this item an exact date although study of the composition might help, a date of Bronze Age - post-medieval has thus been given although it is likely to sit within the earlier part of this range. It is 38.8mm l…
