The socket is oval at the break (with maximum surviving external dimensions of 15.0mm x 10.7mm and 11.3mm x 8.5mm internal) with no mouth mouldings present on the incomplete socket. Beneath the break is the beginning of groove, of V-shaped profile near the top and becoming U-shaped towards the blade. The sides of the gouge are stra…

The blade is C-shaped in cross-section throughout its length and is semi-circular in cross-section at the break. In plan, each side tapers to a curved cutting edge. At the top, the base of the socket can be seen. This is sub-circular in plan with a maximum diameter of 4.9mm and a maximum depth of 3.5mm. This gouge is corroded to mid-green and is pitted overall. Corrosion is active on the break and cutting edge. Height: 38.61mm; width: 13.02mm; thickness: 9.77mm. Weight…

An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed gouge of Late Bronze Age date (c. 1150 BC – c. 800 BC). Length: 76.2mm; width: 17.0mm and 13,4mm thick. Weight: 38.51g. The gouge is sub-rectangular in plan. It originally had a circular mouth with a diameter of 17.0mm. However, although the diameter can be measured accurately, the mouth is now damaged and incomplete. This damage may be old. From the plain mouth, the body of the gouge tapers slightly from the mouth towards the cutting edge to a minimum width of 13.2mm. It then flares so that the width of the cutting edge is 14.4mm. The blad…

Cast copper alloy Late Bronze Age socketed gouge, with part of the wooden handle surviving. The gouge itself is worn, possibly from water action, and is incomplete, most of the mouth having broken off. There are a pair of faint incised transverse lines, presumably decoration, just below the mid- way point, around the back of the gouge. The gouge measures 72.36mm in length, 18.14mm-20.07mm in width and it weighs 54g. The wooden handle, which is shaped to fit the socket is 73.15mm long, 12.75mm-13.43mm wide and weighs 7g. When the handle is inserted into the socket the combined obje…

The gouge is comparatively short, with an overall length of 55.6mm. The socket is oval with an external width (across the blade) of 21.3mm and an external height of 19.7mm (internal: 17.7 x 16.6mm). The mouth of the gouge is plain, and 2.4mm beneath the mouth is a square collar moulding, with a width of 2mm. The sides of the gouge are slightly conca…

Late Bronze Age socketed gouge, probably of Ewart Park (c. 950 - 750 BC) metalworking tradition. The gouge is of circular mouth section and has a low-raised collar, which is very slightly concave and is 10mm deep from the mouth. The casting seams are prominent on both sides and are likely to have been finished by hammering. The sides are straight and diverge slightly at the blade. Sharpening striations are visible on both of the blade faces. The striations are angled across the blade, towards the sides on the front (gouged) face, and are positioned along the blade circumference on the…

Small fragment from the mouth of a copper-alloy socketed object. The socket is rounded and there is a slight mouth moulding. The fragment is too flimsy to have come from a socketed axe; it is probably from a socketed gouge or a leather worker's knife. There is a medium/dark green/grey patina all over the fragment, including the worn breaks, with frequent small patches of pale green invasive corrosion products. Surviving length 16.5 mm, surviving width 15 mm, maximum thickness thickness (at moulding) 3 mm, weight 2.95g. Late Bronze Age.
