An incomplete copper alloy socketed gouge of late Bronze Age date, c.950 - 750 BC.  The remaining portion is a length of the hollow socket with a tapered U-shaped blade terminal to one end. The opposite end terminates in a worn break. From the socket end the blade tapers to a rounded cutting/gouging edge which is concave to one side of the body. The gouging edge is extremely worn. The socket is circular with an exterior diameter of 15.1mm, interior diameter of 6.8mm and is 21.3mm deep. The metal has a mid-brown delaminated patina and is worn. A fragment of a Late Bronze Age copper-alloy gouge (1150 - 800 BC). The gouge consists of a semi-circular shaped blade tip. It is possible that this gouge was socketed, however there is no indication of a socket remaining. The blade is C-shaped in cross-section throughout its length and concave, with the hollow of the blade increasing towards the cutting-edge. The sides of the blade are slightly trapezoidal expanding towards the cutting edge which is rounded. The break is irregular and the reverse of the gouge is rounded. The gouge measures 32.3 mm in length, 15.6&…

Copper Alloy Late Bronze Age socketed gouge. The gouge has a circular mouth (17mm outside diameter) and single raised flanged collar at the opening. In plan it tapers over the majority of its 84.5mm length but flares out in the final 15mm to form a C-shaped cross-section cutting edge. The cutting edge extends back in a V-shaped flute to restore the full circular section around 12mm short of the mouth of the gouge. Casting seams are evident on either side of the gouge which are set in the horizontal plane when the flute is placed uppermost. The socket contains extensive remains of the …

An incomplete socketed gouge dating to the Late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. The remaining portion comprises the tip, which is heavily corroded and has lost most of its original surface. The rear end has a corroded break which reveals the hollow interior of the casting and the sub-rounded cross section of the gouge shaft. A remaining portion of the surface in the concave interior surface of the gouge appears to have striations from use wear.

A copper alloy mout fragment, probably from a socketed gouge dating to the late Bronze Age (c.1150-750 BC). The object has an overall curved shape. The small form of the fragment suggests it is a gouge rather than a socketed axehead. The mouth swells and is slightly thicker than the main body of the object. The opposite side terminates in a jagged break that is worn and smooth, suggesting it broke in antiquity. The interior is rough with a possible casting line present. The surface is undecorated and has a smooth green patina. Dimensions: Length 22.46mm; 18.95mm; thickness 3…
