An incomplete socketed gouge dating to the Late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. The remaining portion comprises the tip, which is heavily corroded and has lost most of its original surface. The rear end has a corroded break which reveals the hollow interior of the casting and the sub-rounded cross section of the gouge shaft. A remaining portion of the surface in the concave interior surface of the gouge appears to have striations from use wear.

An incomplete copper alloy Late Bronze Age socketed gouge dating to the period c. 1500 - 800 BC. The gouge commences in an worn break. The mouth is missing. The socket is D-shaped with an external width of 15.44mm and internal width of 9.34mm. The socket retains soil, therefore, the depth cannot be measured. From the socket the blade tapers along its length into a C-shaped cross-section with a furrow widening down the length to the edge which is heavily worn. The gouge has a dark green-brown patina. It measures 39.13mm in length, 15.14mm in width at the socketed end, tapering t…

A near complete copper alloy socketed gouge corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 7, and dated to c. 950 - 750BC The remaining portion is a short length of the socket with a tapered U-shaped blade. The piece is distinctly pointed oval in cross section with slight projecting ridges running down each side, probably the remains of casting flashes. The object tapers in width and thickness from its socket to a rounded cutting/gouging edge which is concave on one of its surfaces. The gouging edge has worn well rounded chips at its tip and on one edge. The object bulges slightly at …

An incomplete socketed gouge of late Bronze Age date, 1200-800 BC. The gouge measures 78mm in surviving length, 14mm in width at the blade end and 15mm at the break. The butt end is missing due to an old break, now worn, the socket is circular in cross-section at the break. The blade is exteremely worn and damaged. There are linear longitudinal abrasion grooves on the concave face there are also dents and surface scratches elsewhere which may be agricultural damage. The patination is dark green aprt from small pocks of lighter powdery green corrosive products.

A fragment of a copper alloy late Bronze Age socketed gouge. Only the tip of the blade end survives. This is crescent-shaped in cross-section, narrowing towards the outer blade end and expanding at the broken inner socket end. There is a circular indendation in the centre of the inner end, which is the remains of the inner end of socket. The surface of the metal is corroded and the break is well worn, but races of dark green patina survive on both faces. According to Pearce (1983, 43), socketed gouges 'appear to have begun in the Wilburton phase, and continued as part of the tool…

Small fragment from the mouth of a copper-alloy socketed object. The socket is rounded and there is a slight mouth moulding. The fragment is too flimsy to have come from a socketed axe; it is probably from a socketed gouge or a leather worker's knife. There is a medium/dark green/grey patina all over the fragment, including the worn breaks, with frequent small patches of pale green invasive corrosion products. Surviving length 16.5 mm, surviving width 15 mm, maximum thickness thickness (at moulding) 3 mm, weight 2.95g. Late Bronze Age.

Only the lower edge of the gouge survives, consisting the working end of the object, with almost all of its upper socketed section broken away in old damage. It is circular in section, tapering to form a chisel-like edge with a broadly 'V' shaped deep recess in one side. Casting seams are visible on both sides of the object, though these are now somewhat eroded. Preserved in fair condition with an even greenish patina, it survives to a length of 33.31…

The mouth is circular (with a diameter of 20.5mm) with no mouth mouldings. The gouge flares outwards slightly to the mouth (with a diameter beneath the mouth of 18mm). A nearly complete cast copper-alloy socketed gouge dating to c. 1000 to 650 BC. The gouge is oval in cross section and narrows from the base to the tip. On both sides are visible small ribs, residue of the casting process. The tip of the object is thinner than the body and is U-shape in cross section with a central groove that is 33 mm in length and narrows down through the body, disappearing before reaching the base. It is 13.66 at the cutting edge and widens to 18.74 at the socket. The gouge has not been finished as elements from the casting process have not been removed. According …
