BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: item B.1: Socketed Gouge Cast copper alloy socketed gouge. It is cylindrical with circular socket opening. The cross section changes from circular at the socket end to 'U' shaped at the blade end, with the changes corresponding to an elongated 'V' shaped depression on the upper surface which starts 22mm from the socket opening and extending to the blade end. Length: 91.81mm. Mouth: 19.58mm by 17.06mm. Socket opening: 12.80mm by 12.52mm. Blade width: 15.09. Weight: 53.73 grams.

Late Bronze Age cast copper alloy socketed gouge, dating 1000-800BC. The gouge is sub-rectangular in plan, decreasing in with from the socketed end, before expanding out at the working edge. It is circular in cross section at the socketed end, however the mouth edge has been damaged and broken. The upper surface of the gouge has a recess along two thirds of its length, starting at a point located 26.42mm below the mouth, which widens out towards the blade end, forming a 'V' shaped depression along the length of the gouge. It has a circular cross section at the socketed end with an external diameter of 16.33mm and an internal diameter of 11.37mm. The mouth of the socket expands slightly outwards.
