The butt end is missing due to an old break, now worn, the socket is circular in cross-section at the break. The blade is exteremely worn and damaged.
There are linear longitudinal abrasion grooves on the concave face there are also dents and surface scratches elsewhere which may be agricultural damage. The patination is dark green aprt from small pocks of lighter powdery green corrosive products.

A copper alloy socketed gouge dating to the Late Bronze Age betweem c. 1150 and c. 800 BC. The gouge possesses a circular section socket and body which becomes hemispherical in section to form a flaring curved blade edge. Very little of the original metal surface remains and the object possesses a flaky green patina. The gouge measures 86mm in length and has a diameter of 16mm at the socket and 15mm in width at the gouge end.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed gouge of late Bronze Age. Although relatively rare finds, there are a few examples of similar artefacts recorded on the PAS database, most from Wales and the midlands - see, for example, NMGW-52C2A3, NMGW-75FE70, NMS-817C97, LEIC-4AC3D3 and WMID-634197. Socketed gouges are late Bronze Age in date. They are generally thought to be a product of the Wilburton phase of c.1150-950BC, or of the Ewart Park phase of c. 950-750BC; most were probably made between c. 1000 and 800BC.
In comparison to many of the aforementioned examples, the gouge is …

Copper alloy Bronze Age gouge found as a single find.
It has a circular mouth and a flat top, the mouth and socket are damaged. There is also damage or wear on the gouge furrow, largely caused by bronze disease but also faint striations can be seen in the furrow, possibly indicating sharpening. The gouge survives in a very good condition and much of the well-finished original surface still survives. The mouth of the socket is also experiencing some active corrosion; bronze disease is affecting the metal. The majority of the gouge is still covered with the original surface, which has a…

It is circular in cross section at the socketed end, however the mouth edge has been damaged and broken. The upper surface of the gouge has a recess along two thirds of its length, starting at a point located 26.42mm below the mouth, which widens out towards the blade end, forming a 'V' shaped depression along the length of the gouge. Copper alloy socketed gouge. The mouth of the socket is circular and there is some damage to it. The socket is empty. The gouge tapers towards the cutting edge and has a gently curved sectioned furrow. There is no sign of wear in the furrow, but there is some damage or wear at the working edge. The edge is flattened. Along each side, running longitudinally is a casting line, the sprues of which have been trimmed. The surface of the gouge is in generally good condition, retaining a greyish shiny patina, suggesting a tin component to the alloy.

Incomplete fragment of a cast bronze (copper alloy) socketed gouge of probable Late Bronze Age date (c. 1100 – 650 BC). It is likely that this tool is from the Wilberton, Ewart Park or Llyn Fawr metalworking, phases which correspond to Needham’s (1996) Period’s 6 - 8. The gouge measures: 59.5mm length, 17.4mm width, 12.9mm thick. The socket has a maximum diameter across the break of 12.9mm. The gouge weighs 25.28 grams.
As stated the gouge is incomplete, having been broken across the socket and also the tip of the blade. This damage has removed most of the typological features…

The gouge is sub-rectangular in plan. It originally had a circular mouth with a diameter of 17.0mm. However, although the diameter can be measured accurately, the mouth is now damaged and incomplete. This damage may be old. From the plain mouth, the body of the gouge tapers slightly from the mouth towards the cutting edge to a minimum width of 13.2mm. It then flares so that the width of the cutting edge is 14.4mm. The blad…

A complete cast copper alloy socketed gouge. The gouge (used as a wood-working tool) is sub-rectangular in plan, with an oval cross sectioned and slightly flared socketed. The cutting edge is 'C' shaped in section with an elongated triangular or 'V' shaped groove leading back from it on the upper surface of the gouge. This groove (length: 75 mm) terminates 16 mm from the open socket and gradually tapers towards it. The mouth of the socket has a flat topped rim with a ridge around the outside.
