A complete copper alloy biconical bead probably of Bronze Age to Medieval date. The object is circular in plan with a circular perforation. The inner edges of the perforation are slightly convex and the outer edges of the hoop angled to form a central apex.  The surface has a grey-green patina. Measurements: diameter 12.91mm, internal diameter 6.12mm narrowing to 4.31mm, thickness 6.91mm, weight 4.05g. Beads of this kind are difficult to date outside of excavated contexts. Other examples on the PAS database include SUR-E1B1A7, dating possibly …

An annular ring, probably a bead, probably of prehistoric date, but uncertain, potentially Bronze Age to Roman, BC 1100 - 410. The object is annular in plan, with a circular hole which is not central, of 7.2mm diameter. It is a thick oval in cross-section, and the ring is thicker at one side than at the other. The hole is nearer to the thinner part. There is a irregular concavity (3mm diameter) on the outer face of the thinnest part of the ring, which is probably a casting flaw. The bead is also decorated with a narrow circumferential ridge around the outer face. The ridge intersects w…

A copper alloy object, probably a bead probably of Bronze Age to Roman date, 2150 BC - AD 400. It is annular, and has a shallowly convex inner face and a more arched convex outer face making it an asymmetrical oval in cross-section. It has a very smooth, plain surface and is olive green. Unusually for a bead, it has a short internal projection, perhaps suggesting a different function. A ring headed pin is one possibility, but pin shanks all appear to project from the external face. The projection is irregular in cross-section and has a flat terminal. Measurements are; diameter…

A complete, copper alloy, penannular bead, of possible Bronze Age date, 2500-900 BC. The object comprises a bead formed from a small strip of copper alloy. The strip is D shaped in cross section with the flatter surface on the interior of the curve. The terminals are rounded and butted shut. The bead is slightly irregular in shape, having been bent round into shape rather than cast in that form. While a Bronze Age date is possible, other more recent dates are too due to the lack of diagnostic features. It is dated here based on its similarity to the copper alloy cores of other Penannul…

Treasure Case 2020 T120 Description: A small rectangular strip of folded gold with one decorated surface that likely dates to the Bronze Age (c.1500BC - 800BC). The edges of the strip appear to have been cut rather than broken, suggesting that the object is complete. The strip has been folded almost exactly in half, with a small portion left uncovered. The outermost side is decorated with numerous fine, straight, 'incised' grooves, whilst the inner side remains undecorated. Probably a Bronze Age turquoise green/blue faience annular bead. It is irregularly shaped, sub circular in plan and in section. There is no apparent decoration. To make it the the molten faience would have been twisted and rolled around a rod that would then be withdrawn leaving the central hole. Elizabeth Foulds says that the bead is not distinctly Iron Age or Roman but if it is faience then Bronze Age is a possibility. If faience it may well have been manufactured in Egypt as the bead has a colour and surface texture typical of that area's beads and ushabti figurines. Though not pos…

Sheet gold hollow annular bead, circular in plan and slightly biconical in profile, but crushed since deposition so that its original form is unclear. The central circular piercing is 4 mm in diameter and the edges of the sheet are open to the inner aperture, but would have originally met and have been forced open from subsequent damage. See HAMP-72E451 (2011 T526) for a similar annular sheet gold bead with a shallow biconical profile, from Buriton, Hampshire, and ESS-E87773 (2005 T150) from Harlow, Essex (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, p.17, no.6), which are both dated…

A possible copper alloy bead, probably Bronze Age - Roman in date, 1200 BC- AD.450. The object comprises a penannular ring formed by bending a strip of copper alloy round on itself until the ends meet. The band is D shaped in cross section. There is no visible exterior decoration and the surface is green an pitted. The object has been made by bending the strip but not around a former as the interior is not a uniform shape. Beads such as this have a number of uses, from hair ornaments, nose or earrings to simple suspended beads.

Bronze age? gold bead or bracelet fragment, 11mm long, 4mm wide and 2mm thick with a weight of 0.25g. The object is rectangular in form and sub circular in cross section. It consists of a rectangular fragment of worked sheet which has been folded up to make a bead? It has one clear complete plain edge then the body has a series of parallel indented lines about 0.5mm apart, running across its body to an incomplete edge. These appear to be the impressions of incised decoration, forming a ridged surface on what is now the inside. The two almost joining edges appear to be one straight, pro…

A gold biconical bead of 8.4mm diameter, with slightly dished, concave faces and a central hole 2.5mm in diameter. The inner surface of the hole is rough and there is a visible casting flaw within the interior. The solidity of the bead and the rough cylindrical interior of the central hole suggests that the method of manufacture was casting rather than construction from sheet metal. Diameter: 8.4mm, thickness / height: 6.3mm, weight: 1.88g.

A copper-alloy biconical bead of sub-circular to oval shape dating to the Bronze Age, probably middle Bronze Age to early Iron Age. This bead weighs 6.78g. It measures 15.9mm x 14.7mm transversely across the perforation and has a 'height', on the same axis as the perforation, of 9.9mm. The external surfaces of the bead are smooth, polished and undecorated. One side has a small irregular shaped depression at the mid point in the height. This area measures 4.7mm x height 3.1mm and is probably most likely to be the result of a casting imperfection rather than post-production damage. T…

A copper-alloy bead of uncertain date, although possibly dating from Bronze Age to Roman date (c. 2400 BC-c. AD 410). The bead is circular in plan and has a central sub-circular perforation. The outer surface of the bead is irregular due to corrosion. It measures 15mm in diameter and 8mm in thickness. Similar beads are recorded on the PAS database with a variety of date ranges suggested, cf. LEIC-3641F5, SOM-DA2D9C, IOW-04D9D1.The patina of this object might suggest a Bronze Age date, however other comparisons date to the Roman and Iron Age period.
