A gold object, probably a bead, of possible Bronze Age date. It has been flattened due to post-depositional damage but otherwise appears intact. The object is rectangular in form and would originally have been tubular in form. It is decorated on its exterior surface be a series of 17 transverse incised grooves, seemingly incised individually and by hand with the result that they are slightly unevenly spaced and the ends of some of the grooves do not quite meet. There is some damage to the exterior surface in the form of small cracks and splits to the metalwork resultant from it being …

Gold ornament, probably a bead. The thin sheet of gold had been rolled into a cylindrical shape but has now been unfortunately crushed. It is decorated with sixteen transverse embossed grooves. There is a brown substance, probably soil, inside the crushed ornament. The probable bead is very rare for Britain and Ireland though a necklace of similar beads from Ireland is in the British Museum (BM 1853,0926.2). Although the presence of sheet-working technique and embossed decoration in Britain would suggest an Early-Middle Bronze Age date, parallels in Bronze Final individual burial cr…

A copper alloy bead of possible Bronze Age, or later date. It is circular with a circular central piercing 6.7cm in diameter, and has flattened surfaces around the perforations. It is biconical and measures 15.93mm in diameter at its maximum width, 8.63mm in height, and weighs 8.05g. The use of copper alloy for beads in the Roman to Medieval periods is not common, but there are a few examples on the PAS database. Some for which a Bronze Age date is suggested include beads from West Sussex, SUSS 61E555 and DF71D5. The latter is similar to the Brockley bead, though larger and heavier. …

A complete shale or possibly jet bead. This bead is circular in plan and measures 19mm in diameter, its sides flare outwards in its centre. One side of the bead is a lot thicker than the other measuring 11mm, the other side is only 6mm thick. The wider side is most likely to have been the front face of the bead. This bead has a circular perforation which is off centre and worn, it measures 7mm in diameter. This bead is a rare discovery in very good condition. It is early Bronze Age in date and similar to a shale bead discovered in Wiltshire (Annable and Simpson 1964, 117, no 498), exa…
