An incomplete copper-alloy socketed arrowhead probably dating from the Middle to Late Bronze Age, probably the Penard or Ewart Park phase, about 1300 - 800 BC. The arrowhead is socketed and leaf shaped with a central ridge running down the length. The ridge is circular in section. A section of the socket is missing. The socket has what appears to be black carbonised wood, possibly the remains of the arrow shaft. The arrowhead has a light green patina. Meseurments: 28.59mm length, 11.47mm width; 5.74mm thick. It weighs 4.09 gm. There are f…

A small triangular flint arrowhead of early to middle Bronze age date (c.2350-1000BC). The arrowhead is bifacially worked with covering, scaled, low angle retouch. It has two curved notches chipped into its base to produce two slight barbs and the central tang. The angled edges are very slightly convex and one side is marginally wider than the other. Length: 22.12mm, Width: 13.62mm (at widest point), Thickness: 4.19mm (at thicknest point), Weight: 0.93g  A similar example (item 8) of this type of arrowhead was found from the original ground surface of a Bronze Ag

Complete barbed and tanged arrow head of Early Bronze-age date (2350-1501 BC): - of unpatinated dark grey flint with paler inclusions. The "blank" for this arrowhead was a hard hammer struck tertiary flake, then pressure flaked to shape, the dorsal face has semi-invasive retouch, leaving the central area unmodified, the ventral face has rather steep pressure retouch, also leaving the central face unmodified, as a result the choice of orientation can be ascertained, unusually, the bulb of percussion is towards one of the tangs, as evidenced by the fissures radiating away from the (now …

A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age period, about 2400 BC - 1600 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of very light grey flint. The arrowhead is triangular in plan with a pointed ovate cross section. Two small semi-circular notches have been chipped into the base of the object to form the central tang and flanking barbs. One of the barbs is almost entirely missing. The tang is also incomplete. Length: 25.88 mm, Width: 16.73 mm, Thickness: 4.45 mm, Weight: 1.46 g. An exquisite barbed and tanged arrowhead, complete except for the missing extreme tip. It has been pressure flaked over its surface; mostly transversely except for a little of the original blank remaining on both sides of the tang. The flint used is of translucent brown with cream flecks. Pebbles are available locally from the beach but it is hard to imagine that an imported nodule of Devon flint was not used, given the large and often wasteful use of it in this find-spot. Bond(2004), page 125, fig 5.111 gives this arrowhead a 'Conygar d' classification.

The triangular tip from an arrowhead of uncertain Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3500 - 2100 BC). The tip is possibly from a barbed and tanged arrowhead - although due to the fragmentary nature of the flake it is difficult to be sure. The arrowhead has been formed on a tertiary flake of mottled mid grey white coloured flint. The external - triangular edges are neatly retouched with delecate rippled flaking. The dorsal face is heavily retouched with long parallel flake scars / removals - whilst the ventral has very small neat removals immediately on the edge. Generally both the ve…

A barbed and tanged arrowhead of translucent dark brown flint. One of the barbs is wider but has been cleanly snapped perhaps in antiquity. The tip has also been lost but trimmed with abrupt retouch. The preform on each side of the piece has been completely over-flaked but a barbed and tanged arrowhead nearby showed signs of an opposed platform preform. The profile is thin and lenticular as is the lateral cross-section and the edges straight and sharp.Tthe finishing flakework is invasive and made up of large feathered flake scars and sub-parallel bladelets. The work feels highly comp…

A barbed and tanged arrowhead of translucent mid brown flint. One of the barbs is shorter and may be a result of restricted size of the flint for the preform i.e.local pebble resources. The remains of the preform on each side of the piece is flat and of opposed platform. It is thin and the finishing flakework develops into a rhytthm of invasive parallel bladelets. The work feels highly competent and unfussy with no stylised shaping to the barbs or tang. Preparation of the blank must have been good and no significant problems encountered with fine , consistent flint. John Lord in his …

Early Bronze Age flint arrowhead of Barbed and Tanged type, c. 2500BC - 1500BC The arrowhead is near-complete, missing one barb and the tip (with a length of 24.9mm, a width of 19.3mm, a thickness of 4.4mm and a weight of 1.5g). The surviving barb is pointed and the tang is sub-square and is probably a 'Sutton' type. The flint is mid-grey and has patinated pale grey to milky-white.

Translucent dark grey flint making a barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, triangular in plan and lozenge shaped in profile and section. The arrowhead has been invasively retouched throughout on both the dorsal and ventral face (bifacially) with one short barb (the other having been broken or snapped off), that does not extend to the length of the central tang, but is instead at an oblique angle to the tang. The tang appears to display evidence of semi abrupt retouch. Nice piece of work, Where the right barb should be is a clean break, with the edges still appearing sharp, probabley p…
