Object type: BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy probable dagger or knife dating to the Late Bronze Age. The blade is faintly triangular in plan but overall is rectangular, slender and with a lozenge-shaped (pointed oval) cross-section. The blade has a raised V-shaped rib towards the top, probably indicating the remains shoulders. The blade is broken down each lateral edge which is jagged. This appears to be a cut down object, possibly a rapier that has been reconditioned but possibly unfinished. A very similar exmaple, with tang and piercing, has been recorded from Bucknell, Oxfordshire (BERK-80BA1E). A similar…

A thick, heavy, cast copper-alloy lug from a Late Bronze Age cauldron, c. 1200-1100 BC. The object is strongly curved with moulded corrugated ribs as decoration, which flare outwards at one end. The underside of the thinner section has a break through a thick section of the copper alloy, where the lug would have attached beneath a rim clip to the vessel wall. Maximium thickness - 9.1mm, minimum thickness - 3.9mm. See similar examples on this database, including SUSS-8438EC and especially SF-832744, which retains some of the vessel wall (sheet bronze) and a suspension loop. In this reco…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy spiral finger ring of probable later Prehistoric date, perhaps Middle Bronze Age (c. 1500-1150 BC) and possibly of the 'ornament horizon'. The finger ring is formed from an oval rod which has two turns and an old break. It is difficult to tell Bronze Age from Iron Age from Roman spiral finger-rings but earlier examples may have more turns around the finger and be thicker than later examples. A similar object has been recorded on the PAS database as HAMP-7556B3 and SF-761FF6 , see also examples of spiraloid rings in the Near Lewes hoard (SUSS-C5D042) and the …
