A heavily worn and incomplete Bronze Age palstave axe head. Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges and surfaces of the find, giving the axe and thin irregular form. The butt end is sub-square, and is slightly more truncated to one side. From the butt, the sides flare slightly. The side flanges are missing; however, the stop ridge is still prominently visible, especially on one side. From the stop ridge, the blade tapers slightly (due to surface loss) before flaring marginally to the cutting edge which is heavily truncated and rounded. A partial rib is visible on one face…

Heavily corroded copper alloy long flanged axe (developed flat axe) dating from the final phase of the Early to the earliest Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000 - 1700 BC). The axe is of the type Arreton (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, no. 413) which is dated Early Bronze Age III, of metalworking stage V, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 3 c2000 - 1700 CAL BC. The axe has straight sides and a flared cutting edge, which is damaged, measures 71.96mm in width. The axe has a stop ridge and low raised flanges. The septum between the flanges measures 14.85mm. Length: 133mm; width (a…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead of likely middle to late Bronze Age date (circa. 1500-600BC). The spearhead is broadly sub-triangular in plan and profile with a sub-oval/leaf-shaped blade. The blade tapers to a blunted apex. A pronounced mid-rib is present on both faces. The socket and shaft are broken. This is more apparent on one face of the spearhead than the other. It is possible that the shaft would have included loops as is commonly found on other spearheads from this period (Savory 1980, 50-52). The socket retained pieces of wood, presumably remnants of the …

A copper alloy unlooped palstave axehead. A raised stop-ridge survives on the find. On one face immediately below the stop ridge is a “shield” shaped moulding. Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges of the find, giving the axe a thin irregular form. The blade is primarily smooth and shallow and likely would have originally extended further along the cutting edge. This variant is classed by Savory (Savory 1980, 44) to the early part of the middle Bronze Age.

A broken copper alloy unlooped flanged axehead. The axe head is broken into two fragments. Both front and reverse faces of the axe are plain yet have corroded moderately. The cutting edge is crescent shaped, slightly abraded and partially broken at the end of one tip. The blade itself is lenticular in cross section, which may be due to its poor condition. There may be traces of a stop ridge though it is difficult to discern due to the poor condition of the object. The butt of the axe is sub-rectangular and also displays abrasion. Although the axe may have a stop ridge, which is best f…

A worn flat axe head probably dating to the early Bronze Age. The axe is made of a copper alloy and is sub rectangular in cross-section. The edges are abraded and the original patina only remains in small areas. The axe head is thickest at the centre. The axe head is widest at the cutting edge and tapers towards the butt. It is unclear the extent to which the cutting edge and the butt may have been truncated through wear, and as such the cutting edge is worn and uneven. The metal is pitted, and very corroded, beneath which the mid-green colour of the copper alloy can be seen. It appear…

An incomplete copper-alloy Middle Bronze Age un-looped palstave axe (circa. 1100-900BC). The butt of the axe runs to a transverse stopping ridge, shortly after which the axe has been truncated and the blade is missing. The flanges are straight and flat and run the length of the fragment, tapering to terminate at the butt at one end. Towards the break, just past the stopping ridge, the flanges also taper. Palstave axes were made from a two-piece mould, and had a narrower blade than the earlier flanged and flat types. The prominent stopping ridge as seen in this find was a dis…

A sub-triangular, barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is quite crude in form. It is manufactured from a mainly opaque mid greenish brown flint but with a band of white around the point, and the tip of the point is translucent orange. The extreme tip of the point appears to have broken off in antiquity. One face of the arrowhead is very slightly concave, the other is very slightly convex. Description: (I am grateful to John Llywelyn Williams for the following description & discussion) The find comprises two fragments of a copper alloy flat axe. The larger blade fragment was initially thought to be all that survived. This fragment represents the lower half of the axe which has been severed from the butt end at a slight angle. The surface is of a generally uniform mid-brown colour with significant patches of green mottling signifying active corrosion. The fragment is slightly asymmetric in plan with one side gently concave and the other side continuing in a str…

I am very grateful to John Llywelyn Williams for the following description: The axe has a mottled green and brownish yellow corroded surface and is most likely made of bronze. Its most notable feature is its small size - with a length from butt to cutting edge of 73.4mm. The axe is well made with a thin rounded butt and the body expanding to form a slightly asymmetric cutting edge with rounded terminations. The sides are rounded and there may be traces of very subdued side flanges - the abraded surfaces making it most difficult to confirm their presence. There is no stop bevel but a s…

Copper alloy flanged axe (developed flat axe) dating to the early Bronze Age (c.2000 BC) The axehead is heavily patinated with a mid brown corrosion layer which is delaminating. The blade is rounded and asymmetrical and narrows moderately to meet the shaft; it is fairly sharp with no signs of impact damage. The shaft sides are slightly convex and fairly parallel. There are slight flanges visible on both faces of the axe along the edges of the shaft running from the base of the blade and reaching almost to the butt. The butt is rounded and quite sharp. I am grateful for the following description which was produced by John Llywellyn Williams. The axe was discovered in 2012 and is an interesting example of a Bandon type Developed axe displaying some atypical features. Bandon axes are distinguished by their small size, a rectangular, slightly tapering parallel sided body, convex sides developing into low hammered side flanges, a faintly defined proto stop ridge and a sharp lower body flare expanding into a deep crescentic blade with pointed blade tips. This specimen corresponds in most of the listed attributes but differs in the follow…

Sub-circular stone disc with fairly flat faces probably representing the original stone surface. There is no sign that the edges of the stone were trimmed, all have been smoothed off somewhat by wear, possibly natural erosion as well as use, suggesting the shape is of some antiquity. It seems likely that the stone was chosen for its shape rather than being shaped to order. There is an 'hour glass' shaped hole cut through the disc face and located towards one edge. The actual piercing is more oval in shape measuring 9.45mm by 7.89mm. The bevel around the hole is circular and fairly s…

Copper alloy spearhead in two pieces. It is solid for 70mm from the tip, beyond that the object is hollow. The socket is lozenge shaped. The blade does not have a prominent mid-rib but is a smooth narrow lozenge in section. The narrowness of the form suggests this maybe the tip of a lunate-opening spearhead the date of this piece is therefore likely to be about 1000 cal BC.
