All of the artefacts were reported as being discovered within an area of 2.4m (8 feet) of each other, of each other and at approximate depths of 20-30cm (8-12 inches). Full details of the findspot (NGR) and the addresses of the finders and the landowner are provided on the Treasure Receipt form for this case. Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary cast copper alloy axe head of Late Bronze Age date. The type is uncertain, but probably South Wales (Stogursey) Type of Ewart Park metalworking industry dated to c.950-750 BC, but possibly of Wilburton-Wallington through to Llyn Fawr industries dating to c.1150-600 BC. The axehead is represented by the end of the blade only with a straight transverse break across its width resulting in a surviving length of 32.3mm. The break happened in antiquity and is likely evidence for deliberate breakage of the object prior to deposition, or ‘ritual killing’. The wi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axe head of Late Bronze Age date, likely dating from the Wilburton-Wallington metalworking phase to the Llyn Fawr Phase (c. 1140 to 700 BC). The fragment consists solely of part of the blade nearest to one blade tip, one side and face of the axe, and part of the very bottom of the socket of the axe. The cutting edge of the blade is missing, but enough remains of the side and blade to see that the blade curved down from a now missing projecting blade tip. The fragment measures 24.9mm from the broken tip to the break perpendicular to the b…

Prehistoric pottery sherd The fragment is irregular (28.2mm long, 22.4mm wide and up to 11.2mm thick, with a weight of 5.7g). Two of the breaks are old, while the other appears to be more recent. The fabric has a buff oxidised exterior surface but the interior is grey and appears reduced. Frequent angular quartz inclusions are present within the sherd of small and medium size. There is the suggestion of a linear decorative line on the surface, although uncertain. The sherd is a wall sherd and is likely to be of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2000 – 1500BC). The wall thickn…

The blade edges were straight and convergent to one end (with a maximum surviving blade width of 20.4mm and…
