This coin was found in an area of known Viking Age re-enactments and was examined by the FLO and Dr John Naylor, and was found to be a modern reproduction on the following grounds,
Although the coin has inscriptions and obverse/reverse designs which are faithful to the originals, there are problems when you examine the coin closely:
the combination of obverse (EC-1ii) and reverse (CR-G) type seen on this coin isn't seen in the Cuerdale hoard (which is a large sample)
the letter forms are quite scruffy compared to the published coin, their shape and construction different to the broader corpus
the reverse cross and pellets, although a known design, is, again, different. The cross is of a simpler design, formed of thin wedges rather than thicker one or a cross pattee proper. The pellets are also much larger.
the pellets in the outer circle are untidy, widely spaced and less well formed than on the Cuerdale examples
when seen in person and compared to coins of the Curedale Hoard, held in the GNM: H the patina and feel of the coin are completely different.

It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub regtanular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equvilent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being standardised in 1588 (Biggs p.16). Accordingly a medieval date is attributed to this find.
