Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly worn but probably complete cast copper-alloy unidentified object of unknown date. This object is formed from a circular in plan ring with a central quatrefoil aperture, and is sub-oval to sub-rectangular in section. Extending from the central aperture to either side of the ring and on both surfaces are two cast ridges which are 'U' shaped in plan; in profile these connect to form an uneven 'X'. It is possible that these recessed areas with raised ridges might have held a strap or fastening, although no traces of wear are visible to the interior surface. The body of the ring…

A fragment of a copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The artefact is broadly rectangular in plan and is curved in cross section. The surviving section of the front face is decorated with three vertical motifs consisting of two parallel vertical incisions (3.4mm wide) decorated with transverse grooves. The remainder of the front face is undecorated. The reverse is undecorated. The artefact has been suggested as a fragment of a bracelet or an armlet, the curve of the fragment suggests the diameter would have been c. 60mm.

A complete copper alloy hinged clasp of possibly of medieval date.
The object is shield shaped in plan with two copper alloy plates of this shape attached on their straight sides by a hinge. There is a iron corrosion over the hinge. There are two studs projecting from each of the plates towards each other, each with a circular cross section.
There are incised lines across the surface of the plates at a 45 degree angle to the straight side of the plate.

An unidentified copper-alloy artefact.
The solid-cast object is circular in plan, bi-convex and has a circular depression at the centre of both surfaces. At one point along the edge there is an iron-filled hole.
Dimensions: 17.6mm diameter, 8.5mm thick. Weight: 9.37g.
The patination and general appearance of this piece suggest a possible Iron Age date. Given the form, it is possible that this is a knife or dagger pommel, the iron corrosion being from an inserted tang.

Lead metal working debris. Lead casting of conical form with dished top, possibly solidified in the ingate of a small mould. Patinated overall. This may represent the process of small scale domestic casting which produced many of the small lead objects reported. The mass of the object might suggest an alternative identification as an Early Medieval weight representing one sub-unit of either the Scandinavian (at 4.07gms) or Viking Dublin (at 4.43gms) systems for the measuring of bullion - though more of the bullion weights suspected to belong to that period represent multiples of these…
