Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast cylindrical pin comprising a conical pointed end, a collared central circumferential rib, angled below and flat topped above, and an upper shank of round section diameter 5.6mm. The purpose of the object is unknown: it appears to be complete rather than a fragment. It resembles playing pieces for use with small wooden boards with holes to receive the pieces, in the manner of a travelling chess set, with a mid rib to prevent it being wedged in a hole. The plain shank would be easily gripped between finger and thumb. It may alternatively be the sho…

An incomplete probable casting jet from copper casting, of uncertain dating (AD 43 to AD 1650). The casting jet is sub triangular in plan and section. The top surface is sub oval in shape, with a rounded edge. The surface is covered with air bubbles. Beneath this oval surface, the casting jet narrows to a rectangular strip. It measures 19.11 mm in length, 29.32 mm wide and 16.02 mm thick. It weighs 20.2 g. The casting jet is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the…

An assemblege of 19 ceramic sherds. One sherd is pale cream in colour, weighing 10.56g, and is a fragment of late Post-Medieval to Modern field drain. One orangey-pink soft fabric rim sherd weighs 10.69g is a fragment of Post-Medieval vessel. One rim sherd has an abundance of calcitic inclusions and has been identified as possibly being Prehistoric or Saxo-Norman, however another archaeologist has suggested that it could range in date from Roman to Medieval but doubts a Saxo-Norman date. This sherd weighs 22.59g. This rim of this fragment has a length of 59.95mm, thickness of 13.…

A group of 9 iron nails of uncertain date, but probably Post Roman. They were recovered from a known Roman site, but none are of the two main types of Roman nails as classified by Manning (1976). Manning's type I are all of square section with wider round, square or pyramidal heads. His type II are all of rectangular section with triangular heads in the same plane as the shaft. These examples are of varying sizes and shapes, but are all rectangular in section with the heads missing or rectangular. The nails have also been compared to excavated examples from Castleford, and again, ther…

A group of 3 iron hooks of unknown date. They were recovered from a known Roman site, and have therefore been recorded in case they are Roman, though a Post Medieval date seems more likely. One is sinuous and of wide rectangular section, tapering to a sharp point. The other end is broken but may have extended into a loop originally, and the hook may have been connected to a chain. It is 68.95mm long, 33.99mm wide and 7.27mm thick. 24.28g. Another is J shaped and almost square in section. The curved end is broken before the tip. An unidentified and undated fragment of cast copper alloy. It is likely that this artefact has some age - but due to corrosion and damage in the plough soil it is difficult to suggest what this may be. In plan it is broadly sub-rectangular and is rectangular in cross section. One edge is raised / cast with a lip and a cast ridge runs down the upper / interior face. The metal is a mid green grey colour with a pitted and abraded surface patina. The metal is very similar to that seen in medieval cooking vessels. The fragment measures 63.0mm length, 58.8mm width, 5.7mm thick. One edge…
