A cast lead object, probably a weight, counter or gaming piece of uncertain date. It is rectangular in form and section with moulded decoration on both faces. On one surface (upper?) this comprises a diagonal line running the length of the object, transected by at least three diagonal or transverse lines. On the opposite face (lower?) the decoration is uncertain due to post-depositional wear but appears to comprise multiple diagonal or cross-hatched lines. The entire object measures 14.83mm in length, 12.50mm in width, 4.68mm in thickness and 5.79g in weight. This is a cast lead ob…

A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is oval in form, D-shaped in section with central circular aperture. There is no decoration on any of the surfaces and the entire object measures 28.60mm in diameter, 8.44mm in thickness and 34.54g in weight. This is a simple cast lead weight, possibly for use as a spindle whorl. Its precise date range is uncertain and it may belong in any period from the Roman onwards, although a later Medieval to Post-Medieval date seems most plausible.

A cast lead weight of uncertain date. It is roughly pyramidal in form with crudely finished flat base, tapering to a pointed top. Possible traces of an integral loop are visible at the top of the weight, although this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. It measures 35.35mm in height, 23.22mm in width, 18.85mm in thickness and 68.18g in weight. This is a cast lead weight of uncertain Roman or later date.

Likely to be a cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is slightly conical in form and sub-circular in plan. There is a significant circular hole at its centre. The base is smooth but the upper surface is pocked. The precise function is uncertain as it could conceivably be a weight or line sinker. Similarly, there is little diagnostic with which to date it meaning that it could date from the Roman period onwards. Similar, although cruder and undecorated, to SF-EFBE42. It measures 27.61mm in diameter, 7.75mm in thickness and weighs 24.72g.

A complete cast lead token or gaming piece of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan with a flat section and is undecorated on both sides. The metal has a mid greyish-brown colour and is very worn. The object is 15.4mm in diameter, 2.1mm thick and weighs 2.3g. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and may date from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

A complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The spindle whorl is crude and conical with an off-central perforation running through it. The object is undecorated. The metal is a mid brownish-white colour and is worn. The spindle whorl is 28.9mm in diameter, 13.4mm thick and weighs 40.9g. Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods while undecorated examples cannot be securely dated without supporting c…

A collection of 6 iron rods, with both ends gently curving inwards resembling drawer handles of possibly Post Medieval date. 3 of them are of a very similar size approximately 76mm long and 9mm thick in the middle. The thickness tapers off towards the ends. The central section for all 6 is circular with the ends becoming flatter and more oval. All the pieces appear to be broken both ends. The other 3 are smaller at 59mm, 56mm and 45mm in length and thicknesses from 5.8 - 7.6mm. One of these differs from all of the others in that the shape has a re-curve and the iron has been twisted r…

A lead alloy crude cross of unknown date. The cross is mis-cast and may even be no more than casting waste. It has one arm shorter than the others. The arms are flat on one face (the surface of the lead in an open mould) and rounded on the other face, with a prominent flange round the edge. Except for the flange continuing round the ends of the arms, the cross looks like it could be the solidified metal from casting gates or channels; casting waste. If the intention was to cast a cross of lead alloy, it was never finished and the flanges never trimmed. This may be because the liquid l…

A barrel-shaped lead alloy weight, with a hole through the centre along the long axis. It is of uncertain date, but probably Medieval or Post Medieval. The weight is cylindrical and tapers at each end. It is circular in section and was made by casting in a mould; the casting seal is visible running the length of the weight in two places. This is probably a net weight or fishing weight used for birding, fishing or catching rabbits. It has a tan and grey patina. Similar examples are NARC-064B16 and WILT-08BA92.

The body of the weight is rough and pitted and the base of the weight has a concave area round a central area of the same height as the edge. It has a creamy white patina. A cast copper-alloy leather mount, possibly a belt mount of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The mount consists of a slightly convex rectangular plate, with a small centrally-positioned rearward-curving tab on one long edge and three separate protruding circular rivets positioned evenly on the reverse of the other long edge. The rivets seem to have been composed of a different copper alloy and are dark grey in colour, compared to the overall dark green patina of the mount itself. A cast copper-alloy fragment of an object of uncertain attribution and probable Roman to Medieval date. The object consists of a fitting which has been cast with a sub-rectangular central element, which on one side has an elongated flat strip and on the other has a thicker short knop; the longer strip has been rounded purposefully over and around the small knop to create a sub-circular space and a catch, perhaps to hold another element such as a strap inside. This would have allowed the strap to held in a similar fashion to a modern carabiner. The base of this loop has a raised dou…
