An incomplete copper alloy tankard handle of the later Iron Age or early Roman period (BC150-AD100). The object is roughly T shaped with a small section of a loop at its base. The arms of the cross section slant slightly to the centre where there is an incised groove. Near the end of the arms there is a small hole where a pin or nail would have attached the handle to the vessel. The arms are flat on the reverse, curving down to a shaft with a large knop just above the crown of the loop where only part of one side remains. Due to corrosion there is no decoration visible on the surface…

A copper alloy hinged thumb-grip from the lid of a post medieval tankard dating to 1550-1700. The object consists of a thick, wedge-shaped plate, flat on both faces and rectangular in section. At one end, the edges curve towards a rounded tip, the opposite end projects a small attachment loop with an internal perforation measure 2.26mm in diameter. This loop would have secured the thumb rest to the rest of the handle. Below the centre of the plate is a rectangular wedge from which projects two stylised acorn-shaped knobs, one on each side, positioned obliquely upwards and ou…

The main bow has a raised longitudinal strengthening rib, and the attachment plate retains two of its three raised perforations. Constructed of beaten copper alloy sheet varying in thickness from 1.4 to 0.4mm. Falls within the parameters of Horn Group V (Horn, Tankards…

Cast copper-alloy hinged thumb-grip from the lid of a post-medieval tankard. It consists of a thick, wedge-shaped plate, flat on both faces and rectangular in cross-section. At the wide end the top and bottom edges are convex and meet each other in the middle at an apex. On the bottom, there is a shallow transverse notch or step-down where the convexity ends, then there is arguably a low transverse ridge (barely perceptible). From here to the narrow end, the bottom edge is slightly concave. The top edge is flat, except for a prominent lug projecting upwards, with straight sides and a r…

Copper alloy possible tankard handle fragment. Cast oval-ended and elongated spatulate terminal from a large spoon. A U-shaped tab or spur projects from underneath the terminal close to an abrupt constriction, which is presumably where a narrower [c.5mm wide] stem continued. The object is sharply bent thrice, a probably deliberate modification of uncertain significance. The tab might point to an identification as a fragment from a vessel handle. Another feature possibly associated with function is the apparent sooting of the underside of the object. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 17…
