A fragile and incomplete leather object, 80mm in length. The object has been folded in half and is sub triangular in shape, being open along the convex edge. One side of this edge is notably thicker than the other and is turned up, with a row of large and heavy-duty stitch holes of lenticular shape and up to 1.8mm in length; these continue around the corner and along the short open end. There is no evident decoration. Possibly part of a knife sheath or perhaps more likely (given the stitching pattern) the vamp from a shoe. The lack of decoration makes dating problematic, but…

Part of a copper alloy knife holder or sheath dating from the Early Post Medieval period. It is a delicate U shaped piece of sheet copper alloy, broken on all edges. It would have formed a cylindrical (rounded oval) sheath or scabbard for a knife, probably with a loop so it could be attached to a chain from the belt. The sheath is decorated with a band of white metal or silvering across the sheath. At one end it curves downwards. Compare examples on page 42 of Bailey's Detector Finds 5.

Copper alloy binding. Pressed metal binding for a hexagonal object; eight curving flaps appear to have been crimped to attach this object to another. This was possibly fastened to the mouth of a knife sheath or other leatherwork, for which this method of attachment appears apt; facetted knife handles in various materials were made through the Medieval period and could accompany such a sheath. A relict patina suggests the object is of some antiquity. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1400-1500. Length: 21.9mm, Width: 14.7mm, Thickness (of sheet): 0.5mm, Weight: 0.98gms.

Leather sheath for a knife. The sheath was made from a single piece of leather folded round and stitched in a seam along its length. The external decoration is in vertical panels, one filled with diagonal lines and another with zig-zags arranged along the length of the sheath. These are separated by an empty vertical panel. There are three horizontal lines forming a border at the top edge. The sheath is broken at the bottom and and part of the tip is missing.
