A very small fragment from the blade tip of a Middle Bronze Age Rapier fragment probably a Group IV Type dating to the Middle Bronze Age c.1275-1100 cal BC. The fragment begins at a transverse break where it is 8.5mm wide and 2.7mm thick. From this point it narrows in slightly convex curve, almost straight line, to a dull point which is also slightly truncated by a small break. The blade has a sub-oval cross section created by a slightly raised oval midridge from which cironline sides extend. The fragment is a light to medium green colour, The fragment is 26.2mm long, 8.5m…

An incomplete cast copper alloy bladed weapon either a dagger or rapier/ dirk dating to the Bronze Age. The object is sub-triangular in plan widening in smooth convex curves from a narrow rounded point (c.8mm wide, 0.5mm thick) to a ragged terminal (19mm wide, 0.5mm thick). This terminal has two semi-circular cut outs creating an almost rectangular tang between them. The semi-cricular holes are likely to have originally been circular (c.5mm diameter) rivet holes whose outer edge has been lost to corrosion. In cross section the object is has a slightly raised midrib runn…

A large portion of the blade and tip of a Middle Bronze Age Rapier fragment probably a Group IV Type dating to the Middle Bronze Age c.1275-1100 cal BC. The haft and lower portion of the blade are missing to an old tranverse break across the blade. The fragment begins at the transverse break where it is 18.9mm wide and 3.0mm thick. From this point it narrows in slightly convex curve, almost straight line,  to a dull point which is also slightly truncated by a small break. The blade edge is chipped frequently along its length. A copper alloy fragment of a Middle or Late Bronze Age dirk or rapier dating from the Penard phase, about 1300 BC - 1140 BC. Only the butt end survives. The rapier or dirk is would have had a blade likely to be about 300mm long which would have originally tapered to a fine point.  The blade is a shallow oval in cross-section (characteristic of Group 4 rapiers) and bevelled. It flares towards the trapezoidal butt end and extendsto a damaged terminal defined by C shaped side notches. These would have allowed attachment to the separate hilt. The breaks are worn and …

A rapier broken into four parts with two surviving rivets dating to the Middle Bronze Age c.1275-1100 cal BC. The object is damaged around the outside edge of its rivet holes but is otherwise intact. The hilt of the blade is trapezoidal in plan, its short side edges widening in  diagonal lines from its butt which is narrower than the interface to the blade. It is almost flat in cross section becoming thicker and a pointed oval closer to the blade. The hilt is pierced by two circular holes for rivets placed near its obtuse corners. Each is missing about one quarter of i…

Fragment from  a Bronze Age rapier or dirk. The fragment shows a central ridge and two flanking ridges (triple arris) running down toward the length of the blade, placing this  possible hilt fragment in group III (Burgess,C. B and Gerloff, S,1981). Most of the butt is missing andfurther classification is difficult, but  it is likely Late Bronze Age in date c. 1600-1001 BC. The main surface of the rapier is patinated green and shows signs of corrosion.

A fragment of a Bronze Age cast copper alloy rapier blade dating to c. 1400-1100 cal BC. The blade is double edged, tapering, with a central ridge on both faces that produced a lozenge form profile. This is a fragment of the tip of the blade, although the very end of the blade is also missing. The top would probably have terminated in a tang. The fragment is 37mm long, 14mm wide, 4.5mm thick and weighs 4.41 grams. While incomplete the long narrow blade of the object is similar to that seen on rapiers illustrated by Burgess and Gerloff (1981). These are broadly dated t…

Upper blade-hilt/butt part of a Middle Bronze Age rapier, of Burgess and Gerloff (1981) group IV, all old surfaces are thinly patinated chocolate brown, most probably from deposition (originally) in damp conditions, known as water patination. Most edges are relatively recently damaged and show as pale green, though both sides of the blade expansion for the handle survives as original straight edges, indicating that this rapier had the rivets fully enclosed in a trapezoidal sheet Cua rather than the edges cut or cast with open “slots” for the attachment of the rive…

Two fragments of a Middle to Late Bronze Age copper-alloy rapier. They are heavily abraded around the edges (with total or near-total loss of original edge) and do not fit perfectly together. However, they are likely to be two parts of a single object since they are of similar thickness and width, with the same lozengiform cross-section and central longitudinal ridge on both faces. They also have a very similar very dark brown and green patina. They were discovered approximately twenty-five metres apart. One piece is long and narrow, the other is slightly shorter and wider, but taperi…

Fragment of a Middle Bronze Age copper-alloy rapier blade. The lateral edges are broadly straight and parallel for the most part, towards one end these begin to taper convexly before terminating at an old break, apparently a few millimetres before the original pointed tip. There is some loss of one of the edges here, due to an old break. The other end appears to be an old break too and there is minimal tapering in width as rapier blades often are. Cross-section is a wide, narrow lozenge, each face bearing two equally-sized facets divided by a rounded longi…
