A copper alloy horary (unequal hour) quadrant of high medieval date. The quadrant is flat and wedge-shaped in plan with a curved bottom edge. The upper face is incised with lines and numbers to aid in the reading of time and also for measuring distances. The quadrant has several curved lines (arcs of circles) expanding from a central point in the centre (top). Description: Incomplete medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy horary quadrant (an instrument for determining the time of day with the sun). Just over half survives. Its extant shape is approximately that of a sector of one eighth of a circle. The circumferential edge (the limb) and one radial edge are original. The other radial edge is a break, perhaps an intentional one, given its general straightness. The quadrant terminates at the narrow end in another break, this one more irregular, not far from the missing centre of the circle (or origin). The breaks do not appear to be recent. …
