Ceramic building material, possible hearth, kiln or oven fragment. A fragment of indurated heated clay, reddened on its upper side where rare calcareous inclusions to length 7mm appear, and a darker brown below this, with zones on the lower part appearing like the cancellous tissue within bone – whether this hints at the inclusion of bone fragments in a clay groundmass or is an effect on the clay arising from intense heat is uncertain. This object may be from the surface of a hearth made of puddled clay, or from the domed wall or lining of an oven or kiln. Suggested date: Unknown…

A fragment of fired clay. It cannot be easily identified, but it is potentially part of an Iron Age oven lid. The fragment is roughly triangular in shape. The texture is relatively rough. The core and margins are reddish orange with some streaks of greyish brown. The external surface is lighter orange, whilst the internal surface is a light brown. The fabric contains a moderate density of quartz inclusions and black inclusions (<1.00mm).

Five fragments of fired clay oven plates or lids. The fragments present were part of a larger sub-circular thick fired clay disc or discs, commonly found in Middle to Late Iron Age (500 BC to 100 AD) sites. The fabric consists of an oxidised grog tempered fabric, with large possible white quartz inclusions. It is not certain whether these are from the same discs or separate ones. Together they weigh 430g Discs like this have been found in several sites in Oxfordshire and there is currently debate on their original use. The main hypothesis is that they functioned as either ove…

Two pieces of burnt clay of total weight 21.02 grams, possibly from an oven or a kiln or less likely burnt daub or cob of uncertain date. One piece is amorphous while one is more clearly shaped into a curved structure. Both have only a few voids from organic inclusions and no imprints as one sees on daub. Very occasional small iron stone and limestone inclusions which almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. Sparse medium sand inclusions, again probably accidental inclusions. The pieces are relatively high fired but very worn on all faces. The shape…

56 pieces of burnt clay of total weight 800 grams, possibly from an oven of uncertain date. The clay is amorphous with only a few voids from organic inclusions or imprints as one sees on daub. There is no evidence of layering as one might expect in a kiln, furnace or cob. Occasional small rounded iron stone inclusions and very small chalk or limestone inclusions almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. The pieces are all amorphous and friable with angluar fractures on all faces. Only two have small areas of surface, smoothed but poorly finished with c…

Thirteen (13) fragments of fired clay. Together they weigh 119 grams. None of the fragments can easily be identified to a form, but could range from loom weights to oven plates. They probably date to the Middle to Late Iron Age (500 BC to 100 AD). A representative sample of the fragments have been photographed.
