Copper alloy nail. Tapered square-section shank of a handmade nail with a thin oval head, now chipped; the tip of the nail is lost. Traces of lead under the head evidence a usage often inferred from the holes in lead sheet fragments or washers, where flashings had been secured by nailing. Copper alloy nails might be used in a dusty environment like a flour mill or powder magazine where it was desirable to avoid striking sparks which might cause an explosion. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Length: 45.1mm, Shank Width: 9.7mm, Head width: 25mm, Weight: 21.03gms
