Clay marbles. Eighteen marbles made of fired clay or plaster, of diameters ranging from 9.7mm [2, both painted silver] up to 17.1mm, the latter with turning lines on its surface; the majority are of c.15.8mm diameter. These popular children’s playthings were replaced from the later 19th century by stopper marbles from Codds bottles, and then by white [i.e. clear] glass marbles with complex or simple coloured trails, both types also represented in this assemblage. A white fossil sponge of diameter 19.2mm [not illustrated] was probably collected and added to this group as an ‘alleyâ…

A glass marble from a codd-neck bottle dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century AD.
The Codd-neck bottle is a type of bottle used for carbonated drinks. It was designed and manufactured with thick glass to withstand internal pressure, and a chamber to enclose a marble and a rubber washer in the neck. The bottles are filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle is pinched into a special shape to provide a chamber into which the marble is pushed to open the bottle. This prevents …
