Flint single-platform blade core, rectangular in plan and section and lozenge-shaped in profile. Flakes have been removed two thirds of the way around the circumference from the platform edge, while the remaining third is covered in a thick layer of cortex. The flint is a cream colour and may have been derived from a local beach pebble which has since been exposed to heat and cold so that the colour of the flint has become lighter. The core has also been in contact with iron which has left staining on most of the edges. The length to breadth ratio is about 4:3. Bond (2004) illust…

Flint single-platform blade core, ovate in plan, triangular in profile and trapezoidal in section. Flakes have been removed all of the way around the circumference of the core, from the platform edge, and only a very thin layer of cortex remains on a small part (about 15 mm) of the edge. The flint is a mottled light grey colour and may have been derived from a local beach pebble which has since been exposed to heat and cold so that the colour of the flint has become lighter. The core has also been in contact with iron which has left staining on most of the edges. The length to bread…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ten flint single-platform micro-blade cores, of similar size and shape, generally oval in plan and sub-rectangular in profile and section. All faces around the circumference of the cores show the scars from the flake removal for producing microliths, from the edges of the layers of cortex remaining on each core. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour which suggests, along with the curvature of the cores, that they have been derived from local beach pebbles. The length to breadth ratio is about 1:1, which is usual for micro cores. The measurements below represent the averag…

Object type: LITHIC CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint single-platform micro-blade core, oval in plan, sub-rectangular in section and semi-circular in profile, with a deep hinge fracture at the base. All faces around the circumference of the core show the scars from the flake removal for producing microliths, from the layer of cortex at the distal end to the ridged and stepped proximal end. The flint is a mottled grey to brown colour with white speckles and its colour and curvature suggest that has probably come from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is about 1:1, which is usual for micro cores. Bond (2004) illu…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall

Flint single-platform microlith blade core, sub-rectangular in plan, oval in section and square in profile. The core has had blades taken off of it on three quarters of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from about half of the edge of the platform in an arc down to the base of the core. The flint is a translucent grey-brown colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is almost 5:4, which is usual for micro-cores. Bond (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 120, Fig.5.104, N…

Flint single-platform microlith blade core, triangular in plan, oval in section and trapezoidal in profile. The core has had blades taken off it on only two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from one third of the edge of the platform down to the base of the core. The flint is a translucent brown-grey colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is 4:5, which is usual for micro-cores. The core has had blades taken off it on only two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from one third of the edge of the platform down to the base of the core.
