A complete Iron latchlifter dating from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period, c. 100 BC - AD 800.
Wrought iron stem with a projecting suspension hook at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar at a right-angle to the stem. The ferrous material is very corroded and damaged.

An cast copper alloy oval plate with a smooth flat upper surface and one slightly flattened end, ressembling the thumb piece on a latch. The underside of the disc has a square section peg, 4 mm thick and 10 mm long, descending from the centre of the flattened end and a pivot mechanism in the centre of the disc. The pivot mechanism is a semi-circular disc with a hole through the middle where the axial pin would have gone, held in place on either side of the pivot with thin sheets of metal, now largely broken away. The remainder of the iron pin is still visible in the hole in the pivot …

Iron latchlifter. Wrought iron stem with a barley-sugar twist, a round suspension loop at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar of diminished thickness at right-angles to the stem and in the same plane as the loop at the other. A globular end to the bit is probably corrosion or an adhering object rather than part of the key. The bit is not of a complex form for use with a barrel padlock, so a use as a latch-lifter is suggested. The preservation of detail along the stem and a modest extent of corrosion may suggest a relatively recent date or a sympathetic burial environme…

A cast, copper alloy artefact, probably a thumb rest from a latchlifter or similar household fitting of late post-medieval to modern date, AD1700-1900. It has an oval, spoon-shaped bowl, at one end of which is a length of circular, hollow handle projecting upwards at an angle of forty-five degrees. The handle is broken and a section is missing. The stiffening rib at the junction of bowl and handle is on the upper, concave side of the object, making it unlikely that this is actually a spoon. The artefact has a smooth, dark green patina. It is 50.3mm long, 24mm wide and 18.8mm thick. It…
