A hand forged iron possible lance called a contus, although it could also be part of a Plumbatae or martiobarbuli which are types of throwing spears of probable Roman date, 335 - 337AD. The spearhead is irregular in form; the head is much more like a pilum being square in section and tapering to a point, however the overall form is very slender, almost lance like. The spearhead is best described as having a slender profile with a slight bolt like head with no discernable mid rib The blade has a tapering tip that is pointed. Th…

A heavily corroded, angular spearhead of iron. It is difficult to date, but its form and socketed base suggest that it may well relate to a lance from the later medieval or early postmedieval period. The spearhead measures 118mm long, consisting of a 68mm long blade, with a 50mm long socket. The blade is 36m wide at its broadest point, with a thickness of 5mm (including corrosion product), while the socket has a diameter of 17mm. It weighs 66.5g.

A post medieval - Modern iron incomplete lance head (16th - 17th century). The lance head is broken through the square-sectioned socket and the butt is missing. The blade of the lance head has a square cross-section that narrows to a point. The cross-section changes to circular just before the socket. The walls of the socket have two opposing circular perforations probably for securing the lance head to the wooden haft. The shape of the socket is slightly distorted due to damage. There is no visible marker's mark. The iron is in good condition with no corrosion. Dimensions…
