Incomplete copper alloy Roman lamp hook. Broken 34mm long tapering wire shaft at the top of which is a rectangular cross-sectioned flat-top suspension loop, pierced by an oval hole. Underneath this the shaft forms a moulded collar, 5mm below which, adjoining to one side, there is a projecting downward-pointing tapering hairpin pointed-hook. The wire shaft continues for another 15mm before terminating in an old break. Originally there would have been another diametrically opposed hook further down the shaft, (see SOM-EFC2F3) but this is lost to the break.

A complete Roman cast copper alloy hook dating to c. AD 43-402.
The hook is fully intact. At its top is a circular suspension loop that is flat in cross section and pierced by a sub-circular hole (c. 2.2mm in diameter). Below this suspension loop is a moulded collar followed by the bar for the hook both of which are circular in cross section (c. 5.0mm in diameter).
The bar project downwards for a total length of 74.7mm narrowing near its end to a still slightly sharp point. It has two hooked projections extending from it. The first, placed c.8.8mm down from the suspension loop, …

Fragment of a Roman copper alloy lamp hook, the basal spike, now distorted, and the stump of one curving arm. Extant length 32mm. Cf. an example from Colchester (Hawkes and Hull 1947, 334, pl. C no. 33). Mid 1st - 4th century.

Cast copper alloy Roman lamp hook.
Circular suspension loop at the top. There is a moulded collar before the main, cylindrical body. About half way down there is a small downwards curving hook.
A similar example can be seen in the Fishbourne report, no.102 (Cunliffe; 1971; Vol 2; 114).

Probable bronze lamp hook. Comprises long, slightly tapering handle with 2 plain ring mouldings at the end. The handle ends with a point with a curling "hook" just before. Slightly damaged at ends.
